How do we explain what Perry Anderson calls "the bizarre prominence of Bernard-Henri Lvy," easily the best-known "thinker" under sixty in France? "It would," he continues, "be difficult to imagine a more extraordinary reversal of national standards of taste and intelligence than the attention accorded this crass booby in France's public sphere, despite innumerable demonstrations of his inability to get a fact or an idea straight. Could such a grotesque flourish in any other major Western culture today?" This book, based on a careful investigation comparing BHL's words with his deeds, seeks to explore the remarkable persistence of this celebrity pseudo-philosopher since he burst onto the scen...
Since 2008, the Fourniret affair has been devastating France and Belgium. The serial killer Michel Fourniret was sentenced to life imprisonment for a series of kidnappings, rapes and murders. Ch. 5 (p. 144-178), "Patrick Modiano", discusses the novels of the French writer (born in 1945, of a Jewish father) on the occupation period. Modiano typifies the "retro" mode of the late 1960s and 1970s which set out to reevaluate or contest the French myth of the Resistance. In his novel "La Place de l'Étoile" (1968), Modiano suggests the anti-Jewish atmosphere and feelings in French society through its anti-hero, Raphael Schlemilovitch, an embodiment of the archetypal Jew, molded on antisemitic prejudices circulating in the Vichy period.
In the new year of 1944 the French Resistance in northern France was on its knees. Relentless attacks on its diverse and disorganised networks by the Gestapo and the Abwehr had put many of its best operatives in prison, or worse. But in the lead up to Operation Overlord, 'D Day', the Resistance had never been more important to the Allied war effort, and many groups were in the pay of Britain's Secret Intelligence Service, MI6. One such was organised by a patriot called Dominic Ponchardier. For months he had watched helplessly as his friends and colleagues had been swept up by the Nazi drag net, and cast into the old prison on the eastern outskirts of Amiens. In desperation he asked his MI6 h...
