Wartime North Africa
This book, the first-ever collection of primary documents on North African history and the Holocaust, gives voice to the diversity of those involved—Muslims, Christians, and Jews; women, men, and children; black, brown, and white; the unknown and the notable; locals, refugees, the displaced, and the interned; soldiers, officers, bureaucrats, volunteer fighters, and the forcibly recruited. At times their calls are lofty, full of spiritual lamentation and political outrage. At others, they are humble, yearning for medicine, a cigarette, or a pair of shoes. Translated from French, Arabic, North African Judeo-Arabic, Spanish, Hebrew, Moroccan Darija, Tamazight (Berber), Italian, and Yiddish, or transcribed from their original English, these writings shed light on how war, occupation, race laws, internment, and Vichy French, Italian fascist, and German Nazi rule were experienced day by day across North Africa. The Hospitaller Grand Priory of Messina in the Seventeenth Century
This book details the origin of the Grand Hospitaller Priory of Messina. It discusses a breadth of themes, such as the historiography, the Hospitaller’s European commandery and Sicilian patrimony, its management and organization in the seventeenth century, its religious practices, and the prioral mansion in Messina. The final chapter includes a detailed account of the 1674 Messina insurrection against the Spanish overlords. This event plunged the priory into political chaos, fracturing it and pitting members against each other. It also shattered neutrality issues embedded in the statutes of the religion and ignoring the precepts emanating from the Convent on Malta. Europäische Musiker in Venedig, Rom und Neapel 1650-1750
Der Abschlussband des deutsch-französischen ANR-DFG-Projekts MUSICI widmet sich der Musikermigration im Europa der Frühen Neuzeit mit einem kultur- und musikgeschichtlichen Blick auf Venedig, Rom und Neapel als Reiseziele und Wirkungsorte von Instrumentalisten, Sängern, Komponisten und Instrumentenbauern, die nicht von der italienischen Halbinsel stammten. Im Sinne einer "histoire croisée" werden Netzwerke, Integrations- und Austauschprozesse aufgedeckt, mit denen fremde Musiker zwischen musikalischem Alltag und herausragenden Festlichkeiten konfrontiert waren. Auf dieser Grundlage wird eine systematische Betrachtung der frühneuzeitlichen Musikermigration sowie eine Untersuchung musikalischer Stile jenseits nationaler Forschungstraditionen möglich.
Frasca, der Laubzweig
Wie eine italienische Lebensart zum Familiennamen wurde und sich in Europa ausbreitete: Waldemar Fraschke verbindet Namenforschung mit der Kultur-, Migrations- und Religionsgeschichte Europas. Ursprung, Herkunft und Bedeutung der Familiennamen Fraschke, Fraske und vieler ähnlicher Namen wie Wraske, Wraschke, Frasch, Frasche, Frache, Fratzke, Wratzke werden erforscht. Insgesamt werden in dieser Arbeit rund 250 Begriffe und deren Bedeutungen genannt, die aus den italienischen Begriffen frasca und frasche in verschiedenen Ländern Europas entstanden und zum Teil noch heute existieren. Darüber hinaus sind über 1000 Familiennamen aus verschiedenen Ländern aufgeführt, die ebenfalls aus frasca oder frasche bzw. den daraus entstandenen Begriffen hervorgegangen sind. Es wird beschrieben, wie diese Begriffe und Familiennamen entstanden, wie sie sich in Europa verbreiten konnten und welche Rolle die Glaubensflüchtlinge, z.B. die protestantischen Waldenser aus dem Piemont, dabei spielten.
