Interdisciplinary Migration Research with a Focus on New Technologies and Multiple Crisis: Relating Birds of Passage to Social Policies
This volume brings together emerging research on migration with a focus on multiple crises, new technologies, and social policies. Most of the chapters are written by PhD students or postdocs who took part in the 25th International Metropolis Conference Berlin 2022 (IMCB22). The book presents in three sections orginal work on: digitalization and mobile worlds of work; on social policies for Migrants and Refugees; on multiple crisis and the future of migration. Ein Großteil der Beiträge stammt von Nachwuchswissenschaftler:innen, die ihre Projekte während der internationalen Metropoliskonferenz 2022 in Berlin vorgestellt haben (IMCB22). Präsentiert werden ausschließlich Originalbeiträge zu den Themen Digitalisierung und zunehmend mobilen Arbeitswelten, zu Sozialpolitiken im Kontext von Migration und Flucht sowie zu den Auswirkungen multipler globaler Krisen auf Migrationsdynamiken.

The shortage of skilled professionals and the associated tendencies towards de-professionalisation and the softening of professional standards are currently the subject of controversial debate in various areas of social work. This volume compiles background information and problem diagnoses on the shortage of skilled workers and presents approaches to solutions and professional policy demands. The authors look at employment relationships, teaching, study and research conditions as well as the constitution of social services and infrastructure.

Denn mit einem zentralen Raum zum Umgang mit Flucht und Ankunft werden zugleich Gefahren und Konflikte örtlich konzentriert. Parallel zur Entwicklung von Konzepten zur Bewältigung dieser Herausforderungen untersuchen die Beiträger*innen des Bandes die Lebensrealitäten in diesen Einrichtungen.
Solidarity Mobilizations in the ‘Refugee Crisis’
This edited collection introduces conceptual innovations that critically engage with understanding refugee movements as part of the broader category of ‘poor people’s movements’. The empirical focus of the work lies on the protest events related to the so-called ‘long summer of migration’ of 2015. It traces the route followed by the migrants from the places of first arrival to the places of passage and on to the places of destination. Through qualitative and quantitative data, the authors map, within a cross-national comparative perspective, the wide set of actions and initiatives that are being created in solidarity with refugees who have made their journey seeking asylum to the European Union, either travelling across the Mediterranean Sea or through South Eastern Europe. It explores these cases from the perspective of social movement studies alongside critical studies on migration and citizenship.

Rethinking Refugees: Beyond State of Emergency examines the ways in which refugees have been made objects of the complex discourse, practices, and strategies of humanitarianism making visible the link between our knowledge of refugees and questions about the changing status of political power, space, and identity. The author draws upon post-structural analytical tools to develop a critique of humanitarianism and to sketch a bio-political framework for understanding the relationship between the humanity of refugees and their capacity, or lack thereof, for political voice and action. Queering Asylum in Europe
This two-volume open-access book offers a theoretically and empirically-grounded portrayal of the experiences of people claiming international protection in Europe on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity (SOGI). It shows how European asylum systems might and should treat asylum claims based on people’s SOGI in a fairer, more humane way. Through a combined comparative, interdisciplinary (socio-legal), human rights, feminist, queer and intersectional approach, this book examines not only the legal experiences of people claiming asylum on grounds of their SOGI, but also their social experiences outside the asylum decision-making framework. The authors analyse how SOGI-related claims are adjudicated in different European frameworks (European Union, Council of Europe, Germany, Italy and UK) and offer detailed recommendations to adequately address the intersectional experiences of individuals seeking asylum. This unique approach ensures that the book is of interest not only to researchers in migration and refugee studies, law and wider academic communities, but also to policy makers and practitioners in the field of SOGI asylum.
Refugee Mental Health
The focus of this Research Topic is on research that aims to understand the relationships between pre-migration stressors and potentially traumatic experiences, post-migration living difficulties, and mental health in refugees of both sexes throughout the lifespan. We know very little about how concepts of assessing and treating mental health conditions actually work when applied to traumatized refugee populations from different cultures (e.g., the Yazidis people from northern Iraq). Moreover, there is also a great need to better understand the relationship between mental health and refugees’ integration in their host countries’ societies (acquiring language skills, fitness for work, economic independence, private life, etc.). This Research Topic will also focus on the issue of culture—the extent to which concepts of mental health care can translate and be implemented in different social, economic, and cultural settings around the world.
