The Theme of Hardening in the Book of Isaiah
Make the heart of this people dull, and their ears heavy, and blind their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their hearts and turn and be healed. This call of the prophet Isaiah in Isaiah 6 has perplexed readers of all times. Torsten Uhlig reconsiders this text and other related passages. Applying a communicative approach and engaging with recent studies on righteousness, the author presents a new interpretation of the theme of hardening in the Book of Isaiah. He argues that hardening is to be understood in the context of the communicative aspect of righteousness and elucidates the communicative acts involved in the hardening of the people. Describing the role of these passages within the communicative strategy of larger units, this monograph offers a distinctive contribution to the interpretation of the Book of Isaiah as a whole.

David wird zeitweilig vom Thron gejagt, am Ende droht die Personalunion Juda-Israel zu zerbrechen. David übersteht all dies: teils in wenig überzeugender, teils in bewundernswerter Manier. Am Ende ist er nicht mehr der jederzeit glückhafte, sondern ein schwer gezeichneter Herrscher und Mann, wohl auch ein Tyrann. Die literarische Überlieferung davon setzt schon früh ein. Den Grundstock bildet eine Amnon-Abschalom-Novelle, die möglicherweise von einer im Text genannten Figur verfasst wurde. Sie wurde, zusammen mit einigen Stücken aus dem "Erzählkranz vom Aufstieg und Niedergang der Sauliden", der Überlieferung vom Aufstand Scheba ben Bichris sowie einer Ministerliste aus dem Hofarchiv Teil des "Höfischen Erzählwerks von den ersten Königen Israels", das in der mittleren Königszeit entstand. Die Darstellung ist von außerordentlicher literarischer Qualität, anthropologischer Weisheit und theologischem Tiefgang.
Little Prayer Book, 1522, and A Simple Way to Pray, 1535
This volume provides two of Martin Luther's most significant writings on prayer. In Little Prayer Book (1522), Luther seeks to reform the theology and practice of prayer in clear and understandable language for all people by encouraging simple, direct prayer to God, who promises to hear the one who prays. Luther focuses on the Ten Commandments, Apostles' Creed, and Lord's Prayer, giving his treatment of prayer a catechetical feel that would later provide the structure of his catechisms. In A Simple Way to Pray (1535), Luther offers his barber and all other readers insights into his own prayer life. He organizes his comments around the seven petitions of the prayer Jesus taught to his disciples. He also uses the Ten Commandments and the Apostles' Creed as resources for prayer. He sets out to "kindle a fire in the heart" and increase the reader's eagerness for prayer. This volume is excerpted from The Annotated Luther series, volume 4 (Pastoral Writings). Each volume and selection in the series contains new introductions, extensive annotations, illustrations, and notes to help shed light on Luther's context and to interpret his writings for today.
