This study examines masculinity and individualism in four American novels of the 1920s and 1930s usually regarded as belonging to the genre of hard-boiled fiction. The novels under study are Red Harvest by Dashiell Hammett, The Postman Always Rings Twice by James M. Cain, They Shoot Horses, Don't They? by Horace McCoy, and To Have and Have Not by Ernest Hemingway. In this first full-length study of gender in hard-boiled fiction the genre is discussed as a representation of the ideologies of masculinity and individualism. Hard-boiled fiction is located in its historical and cultural context and it is argued that the genre, with its explicit emphasis on masculinity and masculine virtues, attempts to reaffirm a masculine order. The study argues that this emphasis is a counter-reaction to more general changes in the gender relations of the period. Indeed, hard-boiled fiction is argued to be an attempt to reconstruct a masculine identity based on anti-modern values generally accepted in the cultural context of the genre.

Without the Guru

For 30 years Mike Finch gave his total allegiance, his energy, his devotion, his dreams, and his love to Guru Maharaji (the Lord of the Universe, Prem Rawat). He also gave Maharaji and his organizations two inheritances, a house, and hundreds of thousands of dollars. As Maharaji's former chauffeur Mike was close to him personally; he lived as a renunciate in Maharaji's ashrams, and was authorized to reveal Maharaji's secret teachings. The book is a narrative of Mike's time with Maharaji, and his struggle to surrender his life to Maharaji, and to achieve the liberation that Maharaji promised. It is a story of being confined within a rigid belief system, realizing it, and learning how to break...

The Devil Never Loves

The Devil is always a step ahead - for it can lie its way through. It is always on the move and never stable. It is the devil who restores balance in the world. For who will pray to the angels if the devil was not there? Most of the stories we hear are usually false. It is up to our reckoning and belief that makes a story worthwhile and real. This is the story of Michael Entabby, or maybe it is not. This might just be his imagination flying in the sky trying to fool us all. All the joy in the world could not satisfy the evil in us. Greed, lust, and gluttony that suck us towards our grave, stomp over us time and again, somehow has always been a part of our existence. It’s a very putrid fact that the beginning is a successor to the end and what better way for the end to embrace us while we are joyous.
