Metabolism in the Nervous System

This volume is concerned with metabolic reactions occurring in the nervous system. Some time ago, it was thought that since most of the intermediary metabolism that can be observed in the brain is not specific to this organ, there is little justification in studying neural metabolism as such. Later it was realized that for an understanding of neural functions, the understanding of metabolism in the brain and its alterations is essential. All aspects of the metabolism of a substrate in brain, or all metabolic reactions of the nervous system, could not be included in this volume; some will be dealt with in other volumes (such as the ones covering metabolic turn over, alterations of metabolism,...

Central Nervous System

This book is based on the Symposium "Metabolic Regulation and Functional Activity in the Central Nervous System" which was held on September 16 and 17, 1972, at Saint Vincent (Aosta)/Italy, and was sponsored by the Accademia di Medicina di Torino with the scientific cooperation of the Istituto di Farmacologia, Universita di Torino, and the Pharmakologisches Institut der Freien Universitat Berlin. Its purpose was to give a greater number of scientists from different countries an opportunity to report their latest results under a heading concerning general relationships between metabolism and function. We quite deliberately refrained from pursuing the partly heterogenous subjects into details....

Cancer Management in Man: Chemotherapy, Biological Therapy, Hyperthermia and Supporting Measures

This book represents a comprehensive description and evaluation of the most up-to-date approaches to cancer management. Each chapter, prepared by leading basic researchers and clinicians, provides an in depth description of a specific method for cancer management. The chemotherapy section of the book is updated to include the newest drugs as well as those currently in development. Organized by drug class, this section provides the latest information on most drugs, including their mechanisms of action, interactions with other agents, toxicities, side effects, and mechanisms of resistance. The biological therapy section of the book provides expanded coverage of the currently used cytokines, va...

The Skin and Gene Therapy

This first comprehensive guide to the novel field of gene therapy in the skin provides insight into the basic principles and methods of gene transfer into the skin and its applications. It enables the understanding of possibilities and implications such as immunization and treatment as well as safety aspects. Gene therapy in dermatology is the avantgarde of a new field in science with a great future for human health.

Cancer Immunology

This publication provides a comprehensive account of the known groups of human tumour antigens, and the immune effector cells involved in tumour rejection. Chapters dealing with all the major groups of human tumour antigens are included, covering differentiation antigens, testes-associated antigens, CEA, mucin, viral antigens, anti-idiotypic antibodies as antigens, and fusion proteins. The role of heat shock proteins as mediators of tumour immunity is discussed and consideration is given to the immune mechanisms which mediate tumour rejection in both human and animal systems. The application of antibody targeting to identify cancers, and the mechanisms by which tumours evade immune detection and/or destruction is covered in detail. Although the focus of this publication is experimental, as with other recent publications progress in clinical immunotherapy is included in some detail, to provide postgraduate and post-doctoral scientists with in-depth reviews of the field.

Olives and Olive Oil in Health and Disease Prevention

Long used in sacred ceremonies and associated with good health, the nutritional and health promoting benefits of olives and olive oils have been proven by an ever-increasing body of science. From cardiovascular benefits to anti-microbial, anti-cancer, antioxidant activity and effects on macrophages and aptoptosis to cellular and pathophysiollogical process, olives and olive oils are proving important in many healthful ways. For example, reactive components in olive oils or olive oil by-products have now been isolated and identified. These include tyrosol, hydroxytyrosol, 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl acetic acid elenolic acid and oleuropein. Oleic acid is the main monosaturated fatty acid of olive oil...

Function and Metabolism of Phospholipids in the Central and Peripheral Nervous Systems

The present volume contains all the contributions and general discussion presented at the International Satellite Meeting on Func tion and Metabolism of Phospholipids in Central and Peripheral Nervous Systems held at Cortona, Tuscany, Italy in August 1975. The Satellite Meeting was organized on the frame of the 5th Inter national Congress of the International Society for Neurochemistry (Barcelona, 2-7 september 1975) and was just run before it. The publication of the scientific content of this volume has been made possible by the collaboration of the speakers, the discussants, the Meeting Chairman, the section chairmen and of all the scientists who have taken part at the Symposium and who de...

Bispecific Antibodies

Bispecific Antibodies

The concept of using bispecific antibodies for cancer therapy by retargeting immune effector cells was developed several years ago. Initial clinical studies were rather disappointing mainly due to low efficacy, severe side effects and the immunogenicity of the bispecific antibodies. The progress in antibody engineering finally led to the generation of new classes of bispecific antibodies lacking these obstacles. In addition, new applications were established, such as pre-targeting strategies in radioimmunotherapy and dual targeting approaches in order to improve binding, selectivity and efficacy. In this book, the different ways of generating bispecific antibodies are described, with emphasis on recombinant formats. The various applications of bispecific antibodies, e.g. in cellular cancer immunotherapy, radioimmunotherapy and pretargeting strategies are covered, and emerging applications such as dual targeting strategies, which involve the simultaneous inhibition of two targets, are addressed.
