"Hospital superbugs are nothing new. For centuries patients were more likely to die from an infection picked up in hospital than from their original disease. Indeed, hospitals used to be called 'gateways of death'. Massaging league tables by concentrating on minor operations? Not a recent innovation, either. At one time, hospitals refused to admit patients likely to die, and never attempted major surgery." "Barry and Lesley Carruthers provide many such startling parallels in their fascinating look at the development of Britain's hospitals, from a Roman field hospital to the keyhole surgery of today. There are also wonderful stories of individual dedication, such as the GP who found a girl dy...

The second edition of this atlas has been revised and greatly en-larged to take account of recent diagnostic advances in the field of haematology. It contains 750 color photomicrographs of common and less common cell types, and is intended to supplement the per-sonal study of preparations under the microscope. The photographs are grouped into five sections covering red cells and their precursors; nonerythroid cells of myeloid origin; lympho-cytes, plasma cells and their derivatives and precursors; miscella-neous cells of blood and marrow, including foreign cells and para-sites; and the imprint cytology of lymph nodes and spleen. Each section is preceded by a brief introduction, and an appendix pro-vides technical details of staining methods. The text accompanying the illustrations serves chiefly to identify the cells, but also gives explanations of certain unusual appearances and the cytochemical reactions where necessary. A Colour Atlas of Haematological Cytology will be useful to students of medicine and medical laboratory science, as well as to doctors and technicians specializing in the diagnosis of haematological disease.

Sexuality and Consumption

In western societies today, it goes almost without saying that sex and consumption are closely related. On the one hand, there is a plethora of commercial goods and services that shape sexual desires, and practices. On the other, there are scarcely any products or services that do not lend themselves to sexually charged advertising and mass media communication. This volume focuses on forms of hybridization of these equally suggestive notions.

With the advent of the new health authorities, multifunds and consortia, it is likely that the GP's professional leadership of primary care will rapidly become only one of a number of provider options. This book defines some of the future options for the organization of primary care. The evolving possible roles of GPs and practices in these changing circumstances are examined closely. As the new health authorities come into full legislative force, how will they deploy the combined financial allocations for primary and secondary care to support their new capacity to enter into local contracts? Which health care providers will emerge in this market place in response to this shift in commissioning power? These are critical questions for general practice. With contributions from a variety of sources that reflect the varied origins of organizational initiatives, this is a book for planners, providers and purchasers of extended primary care.

Historia medycyny

Uniwersytety rozpoczęły systematyczne szkolenie lekarzy około 1220 roku n.e. we Włoszech.
