Algebraic K-Groups as Galois Modules

This volume began as the last part of a one-term graduate course given at the Fields Institute for Research in the Mathematical Sciences in the Autumn of 1993. The course was one of four associated with the 1993-94 Fields Institute programme, which I helped to organise, entitled "Artin L-functions". Published as [132]' the final chapter of the course introduced a manner in which to construct class-group valued invariants from Galois actions on the algebraic K-groups, in dimensions two and three, of number rings. These invariants were inspired by the analogous Chin burg invariants of [34], which correspond to dimensions zero and one. The classical Chinburg invariants measure the Galois struct...

Algebraic Number Theory

From the reviews of the first printing, published as Volume 62 of the Encyclopaedia of Mathematical Sciences: "... The author succeeded in an excellent way to describe the various points of view under which Class Field Theory can be seen. ... In any case the author succeeded to write a very readable book on these difficult themes." Monatshefte fuer Mathematik, 1994 "... Koch's book is written mostly for non-specialists. It is an up-to-date account of the subject dealing with mostly general questions. Special results appear only as illustrating examples for the general features of the theory. It is supposed that the reader has good general background in the fields of modern (abstract) algebra and elementary number theory. We recommend this volume mainly to graduate studens and research mathematicians." Acta Scientiarum Mathematicarum, 1993

Topological Methods in Algebraic Transformation Groups

In recent years, there has been increasing interest and activity in the area of group actions on affine and projective algebraic varieties. Tech niques from various branches of mathematics have been important for this study, especially those coming from the well-developed theory of smooth compact transformation groups. It was timely to have an interdisciplinary meeting on these topics. We organized the conference "Topological Methods in Alg~braic Transformation Groups," which was held at Rutgers University, 4-8 April, 1988. Our aim was to facilitate an exchange of ideas and techniques among mathematicians studying compact smooth transformation groups, alge braic transformation groups and rel...

Exact eigenvalues, eigenvectors, and principal vectors of operators with infinite dimensional ranges can rarely be found. Therefore, one must approximate such operators by finite rank operators, then solve the original eigenvalue problem approximately. Serving as both an outstanding text for graduate students and as a source of current results for

This book offers a systematic introduction to recent achievements and development in research on the structure of finite non-simple groups, the theory of classes of groups and their applications. In particular, the related systematic theories are considered and some new approaches and research methods are described – e.g., the F-hypercenter of groups, X-permutable subgroups, subgroup functors, generalized supplementary subgroups, quasi-F-group, and F-cohypercenter for Fitting classes. At the end of each chapter, we provide relevant supplementary information and introduce readers to selected open problems.
