The present volume, number VII in the series Groningen Studies in Cultural Change, offers a selection of papers presented at the International Conference 'Knowledge and Learning' held in November 2001 in Groningen. The first volume (number V in the series) is entitled Learned Antiquity: Scholarship and Society in the Near east, the Greco-Roman World, and the Early Medieval West, and has been edited by Alasdair A. MacDonald, Michael W. Twomey and Gerrit J. Reinink. The second (volume VI) bears the title Schooling and Scholarship: The Ordering and Reordering of Knowledge in the Western Middle Ages, and has been edited by Alasdair A. MacDonald and Michael W. Twomey. The papers in the present volume, Scholarly Environments: Centres of Learning and Institutional Contexts 1560-1960, written by scholars in such disciplines as science, education and cultural history, treat various matters concerning scholarship in the period from the Renaissance until the mid twentieth century.
The present volume, number VIII in the series Groningen Studies in Cultural Change, offers a selection of papers presented at a workshop organised by Amanda Gilroy and Wil Verhoeven entitled Green and Pleasant Land: English Culture and the Romantic Countryside. The contributions in this volume illuminate the ideological investments of particular ways of experiencing the English countryside of the Romantic era. While their analyses of cultural change are historically specific, they explore, too, the conflicted present-day legacies of romantic landscapes.

This volume lays theoretical and methodological groundwork for the analysis of Mesopotamian literature. A comprehensive first chapter by the editors explores critical contemporary issues in Sumerian and Akkadian narrative analysis, and nine case studies written by an international array of scholars test the responsiveness of Sumerian and Akkadian narratives to diverse approaches drawn from literary studies and theories of fiction. Included are intertextual and transtextual analyses, studies of narrative structure and focalization, and treatments of character and characterization. Works considered include the Standard Babylonian Gilgamesh Epic and many other Sumerian and Akkadian narratives of gods, heroes, kings, and monsters.
This volume deals with similarities and correspondences between Late Antiquity (c. 300-600 AD) and the Renaissance (roughly after c. 1350). In both periods, the presence of two competing forces, the ancient classical and the Christian traditions, led to a constant dynamic of thought and creativity.
