The Countryside
The Countryside: Planning and Change (1981) examines the relationship between policies and their actual effects on the countryside, throwing light on the problems inherent in a fragmented approach to policy-making. It looks at the underlying reasons for change in the rural environment first and then the governmental response as reflected in powers assumed and rights granted to guide and direct rural development. The way in which land-use changes have been affected by public policies is then examined in further detail, with particular attention to settlements. Detailed case studies are utilised for this purpose.

Problems of an Urban Society
This book provides a wide-ranging review of urban problems and constitutes a major contribution to the mounting public debate that these problems are attracting. Many of the problems - of social and economic decay - are not new; indeed they are perennial problems of urban societies. As the complexities and interdependencies of modern life have increased, so has the resolve to combat the environmental and social ills to which these give rise. The particular focus of this volume is on the 'framework' of urban problems - the changing demographic, social and economic structure, the shortage of land and the transport needs of a highly complex industrial society. A mass of facts and figures are neatly and succinctly marshalled to provide a clear picture of the problems. Stress is laid on the essentially political nature of these problems and the alternative solutions. In essence, urban problems are problems of social injustice, of disadvantage and of lack of power. This book was first published in 1973.
The End of Tradition
First published in 1978, The End of Tradition is the history of four Surrey villages, the Horsleys and Clandons, close to London but isolated and protected from it by the Green Belt. Towards the end of the last century, a period of rapid change began in rural England as a new way of life centred on the nearby towns and cities replaced a traditional rural village life. Estates were broken up, agricultural life declined, village schools and parish councils were set up, and the pervasive influence of the village squire disappeared. But the coming of the railway, and later the motor car, provoked the most fundamental changes, for the isolation of the village was ended. The railway linked the villages of Surrey with London. In exclusive housing estates of detached homes in culs-de-sac, the exceptionally high status of the village was enhanced by the efforts of the newcomers to protect their new style of life through the most comprehensive countryside protection system in Britain. This is a must read for students and scholars interested in British history and sociology.
An Approach to Urban Sociology

Originally published in 1965, the study aims with trying to present a sociological perspective rather than a guide to social policy. Automation and Emerging Technology in Clinical Microbiology, An Issue of Clinics in Laboratory Medicine
The field of Clinical Microbiology is evolving at a rapid pace, perhaps more so than any other arm of laboratory medicine. This can be attributed to new technology, including high throughput gene sequencing, multiplex molecular assays, rapid evolution of antimicrobial resistance, and discovery of new pathogens. In addition, modern medical procedures, such as solid organ and stem cell transplantation, have resulted in an explosion of infections with agents that historically have been considered to be of low virulence. This issue of Clinics in Laboratory Medicine will highlight some of the advances in diagnostic microbiology, including MALDI-TOF MS, pathogen discovery, and personalized antimicrobial chemotherapy. In addition, one of the papers will focus on implementation of new technologies and how to maximize patient impact of these new methods.
Rural Change and Planning
Originally published in 1996 Rural Change and Planning describes the turbulent changes that have occurred in rural England and Wales since the outbreak of the First World War. The book describes the changes from an agriculturally-dominated countryside to one which has had to increasingly adapt to urban pressures. Looking at the changes chronologically, the book provides an integrated history of rural planning in the twentieth century and the developments which have taken place within the State, which has facilitated those changes. The book looks at the social and economic impacts of two world wars on agricultural communities, and the pressures of industry, new settlements and the effects of recreation on rural landscapes.
