Handbook for Clinical Trials of Imaging and Image-Guided Interventions

Handbook for Clinical Trials of Imaging and Image-Guided Interventions is the first single-source, multi-disciplinary reference, based on the didactic sessions presented at the annual ‘Clinical Trials Methodology Workshop’ for radiologists, radiation oncologists and imaging scientists (sponsored by the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA)). It focuses on educating radiologists, radiation oncologists and those involved in imaging research with how to design and conduct clinical trials to evaluate imaging technology and imaging biomarkers. The internationally renowned contributors take a broad approach, starting with principles of technology assessment, and then move into specific ...

Prostate Cancer Decoded

The Facts of Prostate Cancer 2/3 of men over age 50 have low grade tumors or potential cancer cells in their prostate. Only 10% will develop clinically aggressive prostate cancer. These non-invasive exams tell if a tumor is aggressive or not with an accuracy exceeding traditional biopsy results and correlate well with prognosis according to the latest international cancer conferences. The PSA test has a poor correlation with cancer detection. The digital rectal exam is more accurate in detecting high grade tumors than the PSA level. Biopsies are random, invasive and may spread tumor cells. New non-invasive treatments are guided by advanced radiologic imaging technologies. The therapeutic effect is serially studied by MRI and 3-D sonography. While generally successful, interval exams may document an unsatisfactory response, allowing "standard" treatments to be started, if necessary, in a timely manner.

Liver Malignancies

A comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the role of diagnostic and interventional radiology in respect of liver malignancies. Following background chapters on anatomy, epidemiology, and clinicopathologic features, each of the diagnostic imaging techniques is carefully appraised, focusing on new developments in equipment and contrast agents. The interventional therapeutic approaches to primary and secondary hepatic malignancies are then discussed in depth, as well as such special topics as liver tumors in children and hepatic transplantation. Written by leading experts from around the world, this will prove to be an indispensable source of information for both clinicians and researchers.

Building a Better Delivery System

In a joint effort between the National Academy of Engineering and the Institute of Medicine, this books attempts to bridge the knowledge/awareness divide separating health care professionals from their potential partners in systems engineering and related disciplines. The goal of this partnership is to transform the U.S. health care sector from an underperforming conglomerate of independent entities (individual practitioners, small group practices, clinics, hospitals, pharmacies, community health centers et. al.) into a high performance "system" in which every participating unit recognizes its dependence and influence on every other unit. By providing both a framework and action plan for a systems approach to health care delivery based on a partnership between engineers and health care professionals, Building a Better Delivery System describes opportunities and challenges to harness the power of systems-engineering tools, information technologies and complementary knowledge in social sciences, cognitive sciences and business/management to advance the U.S. health care system.

The Healthcare Imperative

The United States has the highest per capita spending on health care of any industrialized nation but continually lags behind other nations in health care outcomes including life expectancy and infant mortality. National health expenditures are projected to exceed $2.5 trillion in 2009. Given healthcare's direct impact on the economy, there is a critical need to control health care spending. According to The Health Imperative: Lowering Costs and Improving Outcomes, the costs of health care have strained the federal budget, and negatively affected state governments, the private sector and individuals. Healthcare expenditures have restricted the ability of state and local governments to fund o...
