The main aim of the work is to present emblematics in Hungary in its European context, and to show the reciprocal influence between that phenomenon and mainstream literature. The description of the theoretical and historical development in Hungary is supplemented by a series of case studies examining the effect of emblematics upon various literary genres. The final chapter analyzes the link between literary emblematics and the visual arts by looking at a specific example. The present collection of primary sources, comprised of printed and manuscript materials, offers a new approach to the history of learned societies and Freemasonry in Hungary in the 18th century. Materials include academic proposals, regulations of learned societies and reading circles, letters, pamphlets as well as Masonic constitutions, rituals, orations, essays, and a sentimental novel. Narratives of Adversity
Addresses the experience of Jesuit missionaries, teachers and writers along the peripheries of the Habsburg lands, which stretched to Moldavia, Ukraine, Serbia and Wallachia, and which was continually riven with ethnic tensions. The time scale of the study is from the "high tide" of the Society (often labeled "the first multinational corporation") in the fourth decade of the seventeenth century, until its suppression in 1773 by Pope Clement XIV. The book examines several of the communities situated along the periphery and the records that they left behind about their interactions with the local populations. It constructs a vivid picture of Jesuit life on the frontier that is built up in mosaic fashion and livened by compelling anecdotes. The Jesuits of Royal Hungary exercised a baroque expression modeled after the larger western cities of the Habsburg lands, which was a fragile splendor in part defined by the need to defend Catholicism from the hostility of Orthodox, Lutherans, Calvinists, and others.
Europe and the East
This volume investigates competing ideas, images, and stereotypes of a European ‘East’, exploring its role in defining European and national conceptions of self and other since the eighteenth century. Through a set of original case studies, this collection explores the intersection between discourses about a more distant, exotic, or colonial ‘Orient’ with a more immediate ‘East’. The book considers this shifting, imaginary border from different points of view and demonstrates that the location, definition, and character of the ‘East’, often associated with socio-economic backwardness and other unfavourable attributes, depended on historical circumstances, political preferences, cultural assumptions, and geography. Spanning two centuries, this study analyses the ways that changing ideals and persistent clichéd attitudes have shaped the conversation about and interpretations of Eastern Europe. Europe and the East will be essential reading for anyone interested in images and ideas of Europe, European identity, and conceptions of the ‘East’ in intellectual and cultural history.
Economy and Society in Central and Eastern Europe
The analysis of societies' transformations and the influence on the modernization of Central and Eastern Europe economies -- between the pre-modern period and the 20th century -- is a useful tool for understanding contemporary trends in the region, particularly since the debates on economic and social reconstruction find their counterpart in modern state construction projects. The history of this region of Europe -- described as a space of ethnic, religious, and cultural diversity -- is illustrated in this book through the dimension of territory, population, and consumption. Jesuit Series
This bibliography encompasses all extant books of emblems, works illustrated with emblems, and books dealing with the theory and practice of emblematics written by members of The Society of Jesus. Also included are translations and adaptations in all languages of Jesuit works by Catholics and non-Catholics alike. This bibliography will be to Jesuit emblematics what De Backer-Sommervogel is to the writings of The Society of Jesus. The complete Jesuit Series will probably comprise some 1,700 entries: about 500 first editions and a further 1,200 subsequent editions, issues, and translations. Many books are described here for first time. Of the 240 titles in this volume, 121 do not appear in Praz, 93 not in Landwehr, and 54 not in De Backer-Sommervogel. Part One also contains a substantial introduction to the various information fields that constitute the bibliographic descriptions.
