Everyday Resistance

This book studies those who, in various domains of life, are resisting the increasingly harsh day-to-day pressures of “late capitalism,” centering mainly on French examples. Far from the global euphoria of the sixties and seventies, everyday people are trying to loosen the grip of injustice in very concrete ways: people experiencing homelessness try to occupy and live in empty buildings; collectives of small farmers and consumers avoid long (and costly) commercial supply chains to defend their common interests; students and teachers organize to prevent the expulsion of undocumented migrants; and activists in the free software movement fight for the “common ownership” of software and of the Internet. Through civil disobedience in the midst of daily life, people are trying to resist, work against, and change laws that protect the interests of firms and corporations considered socially or ecologically unfair.

Innovation for Sustainable Development

Innovation has become the new buzzword across the globe. International organisations, governments, corporates, academia and society see it as the answer to the major economic, social and environmental transformations challenging the models of the 20th century. Innovations are occurring worldwide and alternative solutions to the existing problems are emerging in all sectors: electric cars, organic farming, renewable energy and e-learning are good examples. These alternatives can be ascribed with qualities such as decentralized frugal, flexible, smart and democratic, virtues that are lacking in conventional models. They are attributed with the potential to meet the overall global challenges su...

Digital Sovereignty and the Green Transition

  • Categories: Law

This book is the first investigation of the environmental impact of EU digital sovereignty strategies. It maps the ambitions and limitations of EU digital strategic autonomy and explores the structural challenges underlying its relationship with sustainability objectives in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine and the consequent tensions in the EU energy sector. The EU is racing to achieve technological independence from third countries and foreign multinational companies to protect its digital sovereignty and preserve its fundamental rights. In the EU, digitalisation and the green transformation are seen as twin transitions. Yet, EU digital sovereignty strategies have a significant env...

Sont-elles vraiment nou...

The Law and Economics of the European Union

This new book examines the economic foundations of the European Union and seeks to give the reader a solid grounding of the core concepts that explain why EU law looks and works as it does. Law and Economics of the European Union emphasizes case law and comparisons to analogous doctrines and problems that arise in the implementation of U.S. federalism. The authors strike a balance between the "constitutional" aspects of the EU--the establishment and the delineation of the institutions, with emphasis on their powers vis-^à-vis the states that make up the Union--and the regulatory product of the European Community, in particular the law that implements the freedom of movement of goods, services, persons, and capital. The final chapter looks at competition law in the EU, with multiple comparisons to U.S. antitrust law. This book reflects the authors' judgment that the EU, as an institution and the source of a body of law, has played, and will continue to play, an important role in contemporary international and business life.

American Geography

Award-winning photographer Matt Black traveled over 100,000 miles to chronicle the reality of today’s unseen and forgotten America. When Magnum photographer Matt Black began exploring his hometown in California’s rural Central Valley—dubbed “the other California,” where one-third of the population lives in poverty—he knew what his next project had to be. Black was inspired to create a vivid portrait of an unknown America, to photograph some of the poorest communities across the US. Traveling across forty-six states and Puerto Rico, Black visited designated “poverty areas,” places with a poverty rate above 20 percent, and found that poverty areas are so numerous that they’re...

Ernest T.

  • Categories: Art

Hidden behind his assumed name is a troublemaker of an artist who has unfailingly lambasted the behavior of his art world contemporaries for the last 20 years. Deliberately standing back and observing how artists, critics, and collectors are perceived by the public at large, Ernest T. provides a truly unique historical and sociological commentary, covering all aspects of art and artists.
