The advent of photography in 1839 was greeted with enormous enthusiasm by the public. It quickly spread throughout Europe and the United States, where it was used in a broad range of fields, from science and medicine to art and archaeology. This fascinating study of the first half-century of photography covers the work of early pioneers such as Daguerre, Fox Talbot, John Herschel and Hippolyte Bayard, to later technical innovations and the arrival of the Kodak camera in 1888, when photography finally became accessible to a mass audience.

A timely and expansive survey of a groundbreaking American art movement that overturned aesthetic hierarchies in a riot of color and ornamentation The Pattern and Decoration movement emerged in the 1970s as an embrace of long-dismissed art forms associated with the decorative. Pioneering artists such as Miriam Schapiro (1923-2015), Joyce Kozloff (b. 1942), Robert Kushner (b. 1949), and others appropriated patterns, frequently from non-Western decorative arts, to produce intricate, often dizzying or gaudy designs in media ranging from painting, sculpture, and collage to ceramics, installation art, and performance. This dazzling book showcases an astonishing array of works by more than 40 arti...

Pattern and Decoration: Ornament As Promise

The publication undertakes a comprehensive reappraisal of a hitherto nearly overlooked US-American art movement: Pattern and Decoration (1975-1985). By reclaiming color, variation of forms as well as sensuality, artists such as Valerie Jaudon, Robert Kushner and Miriam Schapiro radically distinguished themselves from the predominant Minimal Art and Concept Art at that time. Pattern and Decoration questioned not only traditional notions of art, but also addressed broader political and social issues like the position of women or ethnic minorities in the global art scene.00Exhibition: Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst, Aachen, Germany (21.09.2018-13.01.2019) / mumok, Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung, Vienna, Austria (22.02.-01.09.2019).

"Hila was born in Shkodra in 1944, and lives and works in Tirana. During his studies in the 1960s he experimented timidly with deformation. In 1972 he painted "Planting of Trees", a pleasant picture rendered slightly unreal through the use of color, which because of its departure from the approved socialist realist doctrine, soon became a pretext for ordering him to work in a poultry processing plant, where his main task was hauling sacks. In the evenings he secretly created a series of drawings documenting the life of the workers (the "Poultry" series, 1975-76), harrowing in their raw realism. In the 1990s, seeking a path back to painting, Hila carefully observed life evolving after the fal...

Contemporary art photography is paradoxical. Anyone can look at it and form an opinion about what they see, yet it represents critical positions that only a small minority of well-informed viewers can usually access. This book provides an introduction to the ideas behind today's striking photographic images.

Fiona Rae

This title examines Fiona Rae's paintings from the last decade when she began to explore, in painterly analogues, many of the new visual conventions familiar to a post-Photoshop generation. She mixes graphic and cartoon imagery with abstract marks and spontaneous gestures to create an iconoclastic synthesis of painterly languages.

The Future is Now

The Future is Now: A New Look at African Diaspora Studies is an exciting collection of essays representative of new voices in this ever-expanding field. Writing in English, Spanish, French, and Haitian Creole, the volume’s contributors look at the fields of art, literature, film, and music. From the Hispanophone, Francophone, and Anglophone Caribbean to the United States and Europe, the scholars here interrogate themes of memory, power, gender, identity, race, and religion. In so doing, they uncover forgotten episodes of history previously lost to hegemonic tellings of the past. Here, readers will find studies on Haitian documentary, Puerto Rican art, Trinidadian calypso, Colombian poetry, the African-American novel, and African photography and collage. The Future Is Now serves as a celebration of the contributions made by peoples of African descent, providing a glimpse at the breadth of cultural offerings to be found throughout the African Diaspora in the Americas and Europe.
