New Media and Populism
This book aims to address both the historical roots and the conceptual structure of populism, to address different aspects of the ongoing deep conceptual debates and to contribute to the literature through original studies. While the classical definition of populism that focuses on the distinction between "the people" and "the elites" continues, its reliance on new media technologies, its relationship with changing modes of political representation and identification, and its increasing ubiquity need to be explained. Therefore, it is necessary to re-discuss populism in the context of the transforming global media. In this new media environment, it is important to abandon the view that populism exists as a direct or unmediated phenomenon between the leader and the people, and to explore and demonstrate the intensely mediated nature of populism. This book aims to present a different perspective on populist discourse and action, thanks to the ubiquity, easy accessibility, increasing speed and scope of communication technologies.

Gezi at Ten
Upon the tenth anniversary of the Gezi protests, the book takes upon the task of critically re-examining the social uprising of June 2013 in Turkey by compensating for blind spots in the academic corpus hitherto generated. This volume braves into subjects largely neglected by the extant scholarship, in particular, the organizational aspects of the Gezi upheaval, which bear heavily on the course of social and political affairs that has since taken dramatic turns. By delving into the question of political practice, whether on the part of the state, the government or the opposition, the book re-evaluates how the emergent collective momentum was managed by the contesting parties. In other words, the volume concentrates on the multifaceted political organizing of social forces in conflict both during and in the aftermath of the protests. Extractivism Across Production and Social Reproduction
This book examines the political economy of natural resource extraction in the Global South across production and social reproduction. Building on a fieldwork which stretched over six years, the book argues that natural resource extraction in the agrarian South is a multi-dimensional development strategy, whose holistic analysis necessitates attention to (i) the significance of the natural resource in question for macro development plans and global value chains, (ii) the formation of the classes of extractive labour across production and social reproduction, (iii) gender division of labour within rural extractive households and rural labour markets, and (iv) labour process and control strategies in the spheres of production and social reproduction.

This book provides a critical analysis of the European Union’s approach to ‘governance’, focusing on the way in which civil society is incorporated within the EU decision-making process and arguing that it is not conducive to the democratisation of EU governance. Using a governmentality approach, Kutay demonstrates that civic actors are not incorporated into EU decision-making processes as they are; rather, they are formed, manipulated and guided by political programming. The author explains how this acts to prescribe and construct particular types of subjectivities, thereby limiting and constraining the types of participation that might emerge as part of European civil society and the process of political participation.
