Purchasing Whiteness

“A magisterial tour de force that will be received as a significant contribution to the historiography of race in colonial Latin America.” —Cecily Jones, H-Caribbean The colonization of Spanish America resulted in the mixing of Natives, Europeans, and Africans and the subsequent creation of a casta system that discriminated against them. Members of mixed races could, however, free themselves from such burdensome restrictions through the purchase of a gracias al sacar—a royal exemption that provided the privileges of Whiteness. For more than a century, the whitening gracias al sacar has fascinated historians. Even while the documents remained elusive, scholars continually mentioned th...

Populism in Latin America

This updated edition of Populism in Latin America discusses new developments in populism as a political phenomenon and the emergence of new populist political figures in Mexico, Argentina, and Venezuela in particular. For more than one hundred years—from the beginning of the twentieth to the early twenty-first century—Latin American populists proved amazingly successful at gaining high office, holding on to power, maintaining their followings, and renewing their careers. They raised more campaign money, got more voters to the polls, and held followers’ allegiances far better than traditional politicians. Certainly some populist leaders were corrupt, others manipulated their followers, a...

The Magical State

In 1935, after the death of dictator General Juan Vicente Gómez, Venezuela consolidated its position as the world's major oil exporter and began to establish what today is South America's longest-lasting democratic regime. Endowed with the power of state oil wealth, successive presidents appeared as transcendent figures who could magically transform Venezuela into a modern nation. During the 1974-78 oil boom, dazzling development projects promised finally to effect this transformation. Yet now the state must struggle to appease its foreign creditors, counter a declining economy, and contain a discontented citizenry. In critical dialogue with contemporary social theory, Fernando Coronil examines key transformations in Venezuela's polity, culture, and economy, recasting theories of development and highlighting the relevance of these processes for other postcolonial nations. The result is a timely and compelling historical ethnography of political power at the cutting edge of interdisciplinary reflections on modernity and the state.

Neutrosophic Analysis of Nutritional Orientation in University Students

In the present study, Neutrosophy is used for the analysis of the nutritional orientation of university students. Since this approach is the least treated in the specialized scientific literature, the research arises because of the potential of Neutrosophy in the evaluation of this topic is little used. The objective of the research is to carry out a neutrosophic analysis of nutritional orientation in university students. For this purpose, methods, and techniques from sciences in general, and Neutrosophy, in particular, were used. Theoretical, empirical, and mathematical-statistical methods and techniques were also used. After applying these instruments, the results obtained denote little knowledge of the students about nutritional orientation. Which is the reason that leaves open future lines of research on this topic.
