In recent years there has been an explosion of interest in the production of nanoscale fibres for drug delivery and tissue engineering. Nanofibres in Drug Delivery aims to outline to new researchers in the field the utility of nanofibres in drug delivery, and to explain to them how to prepare fibres in the laboratory. The book begins with a brief discussion of the main concepts in pharmaceutical science. The authors then introduce the key techniques that can be used for fibre production and explain briefly the theory behind them. They discuss the experimental implementation of fibre production, starting with the simplest possible set-up and then moving on to consider more complex arrangements. As they do so, they offer advice from their own experience of fibre production, and use examples from current literature to show how each particular type of fibre can be applied to drug delivery. They also consider how fibre production could be moved beyond the research laboratory into industry, discussing regulatory and scale-up aspects.

Silver, Butter, Cloth discusses what constituted 'money' in the Viking Age, and how 'money' was used? It is widely accepted that silver constituted the main form of currency. Silver, Butter, Cloth examines how silver functioned as payment but also explores the monetary role of non-silver currencies in the Viking economy.

Linear Algebra with Applications

Revised and edited, Linear Algebra with Applications, Seventh Edition is designed for the introductory course in linear algebra and is organized into 3 natural parts. Part 1 introduces the basics, presenting systems of linear equations, vectors and subspaces of Rn, matrices, linear transformations, determinants, and eigenvectors. Part 2 builds on this material, introducing the concept of general vector spaces, discussing properties of bases, developing the rank/nullity theorem and introducing spaces of matrices and functions. Part 3 completes the course with many of the important ideas and methods of numerical linear algebra, such as ill-conditioning, pivoting, and LU decomposition. Offering 28 core sections, the Seventh Edition successfully blends theory, important numerical techniques, and interesting applications making it ideal for engineers, scientists, and a variety of other majors.

Metallomesogens

Research on metal-containing liquid crystals is a rapidly expanding, multidisciplinary field with new materials continually being synthesized and novel applications being developed. 'Metallomesogens' is the first comprehensive survey of the field, introducing the reader to: * materials design * synthesis * physical properties * emerging applications Carefully selected references round off this well-organized compendium. It is an indispensable guide to experienced researchers in coordination and organometallic chemistry as well as in liquid-crystal and materials science. Newcomers and graduate students will also benefit from this didactically sound introduction to the field.

Biomedical Applications of Inorganic Materials

This book provides a contemporary research-led overview of the applications of inorganic materials in biomedicine. It begins with a short introduction summarising key concepts in inorganic materials (layered materials, framework materials etc.), and explaining the need for new materials in medicine. It then discusses the key areas in which inorganic materials have been applied, considering: drug delivery; imaging; diagnostics and theranostics; hard matter restoration; and vaccines. Each chapter gives an overview of the major extant challenges in the research area, before presenting a systematic review of how inorganic materials have been applied to gain traction in the field. A clear focus is maintained on the fate of the applied materials in vivo, clinical considerations, and the path to translation from lab to clinic. With contributions from leading researchers, Biomedical Applications of Inorganic Materials will provide a comprehensive introduction for advanced undergraduates, postgraduates and researchers wishing to learn about the topic.

The Loch Ness Monster: a creature that should have died out with the dinosaurs, or a legend built on hoaxes and wishful thinking? Sir Peter Scott, internationally renowned naturalist and president of the World Wildlife Fund, was convinced that the Monster existed. So were senior scientists at London's Natural History Museum and Chicago University; they lost their jobs because they refused to renounce their belief in the creature. For decades, the scientific establishment was determined to quash attempts to investigate Loch Ness - until Nature, the world's greatest research journal, published an article by Peter Scott featuring underwater photographs of the Monster. Drawing extensively on new...

Philosophy in Ovid, Ovid as Philosopher

"This volume contains sixteen essays on various aspects of Ovid's engagement with philosophical trends and topics. Ovid has long been celebrated for the versatility of his poetic imagination, the diversity of his generic experimentation throughout his long career, and his intimate engagement with the Greco-Roman literary tradition that precedes him; but what of his engagement with the philosophical tradition? Ovid's close familiarity with philosophical ideas and with specific philosophical texts has long been recognized, perhaps most prominently in the Pythagorean, Platonic, Empedoclean, and Lucretian shades that color his Metamorphoses. This philosophical component, however, has often been ...
