Emerging from the Mist
Ethnographic, ethnohistoric, and archaeological understanding of the pre-contact nature of the Northwest Coast has changed dramatically over the last twenty years. The ethnography of this area, which describes the most prominent examples of socially-complex hunters and gatherers, is known and studied across the globe but its archaeology is much less well known. Emerging from the Mist expands and updates our understanding of the nature and evolution of pre-contact Northwest Coast society. Addressing a wide range of topics, including original and penetrating analyses of the fur trade, pre-contact metallurgy and architecture, and migration, the collection makes a significant contribution to our understanding of the Northwest Coast. Scholars and students of archaeology and anthropology, and those with an interest in pre-contact Northwest Coast history will find this volume especially rewarding. This volume carries on the intellectual traditions of Wayne Suttles' grounded and empirical approach, and that of Donald H. Mitchell, who more than any other researcher integrated archaeology, ethnography and ethnohistory into his own research.
People who Lived in Big Houses
Large domestic structures have always attracted special attention due to their irregularity, and have perhaps been the object of greater speculation and theorising than smaller units. By subjecting such dwelling to spatial analysis and yat retaining a clear focus on the disparate permutations of house/household correlations, the studies presented here examine the interior features and artefact assemblages unearthed in structures from a variety of sites in order to discuss their functional and social uses. The area of comparison is predominantly New World, and papers incorporate data on economic organisation, spatial demarcation, domestic group composition and the evolution of large structures.

A Totem Pole History
Joseph Hillaire (Lummi, 1894-1967) is recognized as one of the great Coast Salish artists, carvers, and tradition-bearers of the twentieth century. In A Totem Pole History, his daughter Pauline Hillaire, Scälla-Of the Killer Whale, who is herself a well-known cultural historian and conservator, tells the story of her father's life and the traditional and contemporary Lummi narratives that influenced his work. A Totem Pole History contains seventy-six photographs, including Joe's most significant totem poles, many of which Pauline watched him carve. She conveys with great insight the stories, teachings, and history expressed by her father's totem poles. Eight contributors provide essays on Coast Salish art and carving, adding to the author's portrayal of Joe's philosophy of art in Salish life, particularly in the context of twentieth century intercultural relations. This engaging volume provides an historical record to encourage Native artists and brings the work of a respected Salish carver to the attention of a broader audience.

Collective Action and the Reframing of Early Mesoamerica
In considering the long trajectory of human societies, researchers have too often favored models of despotic control by the few or structural models that fail to grant agency to those with less power in shaping history. Recent scholarship demonstrates such models to be not only limiting but also empirically inaccurate. This Element reviews archaeological approaches to collective action drawing on theoretical perspectives from across the globe and case studies from prehispanic Mesoamerica. It highlights how institutions and systems of governance matter, vary over space and time, and can oscillate between more pluralistic and more autocratic forms within the same society, culture, or polity. The historical coverage examines resource dilemmas and ways of mediating them, how ritual and religion can foster both social solidarity and hierarchy, the political financing of institutions and variability in forms of governance, and lessons drawn to inform the building of more resilient communities in the present.
