Through the Lion Gate

"As an institution with broad public reach, the Berlin Zoo for more than 150 years helped to shape German views not only of the animal world, but of the human world far beyond Germany's borders. Entwined with the fate of the German capital, the zoo suffered near complete obliteration during WW II, but Berliners resurrected their zoo immediately afterwards, paving the way for it to obtain its current status as the most species-rich zoo in the world"--

The Berlin Wall and the Intra-German Border 1961-89

The border between East and West Germany was closed on 26 May 1953. On 13 August 1961 crude fences and walls were erected around West Berlin: the Berlin Wall had been created. The Wall encircled West Berlin for a distance of 155km, and its barriers and surveillance systems evolved over the years into an advanced obstacle network. The Intra-German Border ran from the Baltic Sea to the Czechoslovak border for 1,381km, and was where NATO forces faced the Warsaw Pact for the 45 years of the Cold War. This book examines the international situation that led to the establishment of the Berlin Wall and the IGB, and discusses how these barrier systems were operated, and finally fell.

Franco's bloody insurrection taught this Englishman all about hell. Arriving in his mother's country, the now Nazi Germany, Conrad is sick at heart. Even Berlin salutes fascism. Himmler's black-shirted troops rule the city, and every German arm bears a Swastika. But does every German heart belong to Hitler? Drawn into a world of danger and deceit Conrad and his friend Theo are united by a single ambition: to free the fatherland from the Fuhrer.
