Whether I was politically wrong in going to the Lords I know not, but I would not have been made leader of a section, or been disloyal to the chosen leader in the Commons, with whom I never ceased to be on the most cordial terms. We acted with entire unanimity, but he had his enemies who would have tried to make use of me for an instrument. At all events I am clear that my health would not long have been equal to the strain, and the lighter work in the Lords has been the means of my preserving it, and my being far more with my family.'
