Once upon a time...
The 'Once Upon a Time' team was founded in 2016 by a group of scientists who want to be listened to. Scientists who want to transfer knowledge as entertainingly and comprehensibly as possible without compromising on accuracy or scientific precision. In 2017, we published a first volume with stories about the threats that the Earth is facing and the amazing secrets it holds for us. The current lust for knowledge and action in environmental matters now provides the perfect backdrop for the launch of our second volume packed full with new fun and factual tales.

In 2010 the Deepwater Horizon explosion and fire in the Gulf of Mexico caused the largest offshore oil spill in U.S. history, resulting in significant impacts on the region\'s environment and residents. Legal settlements with the companies held responsible led the federal government to ask the National Academy of Sciences to form and administer a 30-year program to enhance oil system safety, human health, and environmental resources in the Gulf of Mexico and other U.S. continental shelf areas where offshore oil and gas exploration and production occur or are under consideration. Use of Proxies in Paleoceanography
Paleoceanographic proxies provide infonnation for reconstructions of the past, including climate changes, global and regional oceanography, and the cycles of biochemical components in the ocean. These prox ies are measurable descriptors for desired but unobservable environmental variables such as tempera ture, salinity, primary productivity, nutrient content, or surface-water carbon dioxide concentrations.
