POW on the Sumatra Railway

John Geoffrey Lee (always known as Geoff) joined the RAF on his 20th birthday in June 1941. He left Liverpool on a troop ship in December 1941, with no idea where he was going. He eventually arrived in Java, where he was captured by the Japanese, along with many others. During his time in captivity, he survived several camps in Java, Ambon and Singapore and three hell ship journeys. After being washed ashore in Sumatra, (the ferry he was being transported on blew up), he was then recaptured and suffered sheer hell as a slave on the Sumatra Railway. Enduring bouts of malaria, beri beri, tropical ulcers and a starvation diet was bad enough, but this was exacerbated by the searing heat and extr...

If you have never had any secret internal conflicts or doubts, this book is probably not for you. If instead you have experiences of what it is to be racked with an identity crisis, rejection complexes, hatred for others, abuse or a crippling self-image, to name just a few, then here is an author who you might find may understand. Geoff was born into a swirling cauldron of darkness, conflict and despair leading to near-suicidal thoughts, but slowly groped his way through, by trial and (many) errors and false starts to freedom and 'life in all its fullness'. Geoff takes us by the hand and walks us through many of his life's horrors, absurdities and hilarities and shares with us many of his re...

The Epistemic Role of Consciousness

What is the role of consciousness in our mental lives? Declan Smithies argues here that consciousness is essential to explaining how we can acquire knowledge and justified belief about ourselves and the world around us. On this view, unconscious beings cannot form justified beliefs and so they cannot know anything at all. Consciousness is the ultimate basis of all knowledge and epistemic justification. Smithies builds a sustained argument for the epistemic role of phenomenal consciousness which draws on a range of considerations in epistemology and the philosophy of mind. His position combines two key claims. The first is phenomenal mentalism, which says that epistemic justification is deter...
