Conflicts and Conciliations
Between 1881 and 1897, Benito P rez Gald s, generally acknowledged as Spain's greatest nineteenth-century novelist, composed some twenty "contemporary" novels, which Geoffrey Ribbans characterizes as the peak of his achievement. This monumental study traces the evolution of the many strands that make up one of them: the long and complex novel Fortunata y Jacinta. Ribbans examines the various stages of composition, not only the earlier, reconstructed Alpha version but also subsequent revisions in the much corrected handwritten text and in the printer's galleys. He treats these tentative drafts as part of the process of reaching out toward the coherent definitive text. Ribbans's analysis of such devices as the ambiguous role of the narrator, the use of free indirect style and direct dialogue, and the construction of distinctive ideolects leads to the heart of his study, the development of Gald s's characters.
Gender and Nation in the Spanish Modernist Novel
Offering a fresh, revisionist analysis of Spanish fiction from 1900 to 1940, this study examines the work of both men and women writers and how they practiced differing forms of modernism. Part I, From the Middle Ages to the Siglo de Oro, includes essays that deal with Francisco de Osuna’s "higher memory", the "Dark Night" of San Juan de la Cruz, Judaeo-Islamic traditions in Luis de León and Miguel de Molinos’ Spiritual Guide. Part II, From the Dawn of Romanticism to the Twentieth Century, contains articles concerned with writers, works or themes as: Sánchez’s Colección and Percy’s Reliques, Rivas and tragedy, El moro expósito, Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, Victor Hugo and "La Nonne sanglante". An article, dealing comparatively with Goytisolo and Zorrilla, which provides "A Missing Link in the Dis-affiliation of a Post-Romantic Expatriate in Revolt?" aptly concludes the volume.
Aunt Tula
Aunt Tula (La tia Tula), published in 1921, is one of the few novels written by Miguel de Unamuno to centre on a female protagonist. It is a vivid, nuanced portrait of the intelligent, wilful and yet vulnerable Tula. Despite having no biological children of her own, the unmarried Tula becomes the primary maternal figure for successive generations of children; some related to her, others not. Her chaste maternity is presented as a complex response to her long-held, self-sacrificing romantic love for her brother-in-law, her antipathy for the submissive role expected of bourgeois married women, and Tula's fear of her own physicality. Julia Biggane's translation captures the accessibility of style and richness of literary substance in the original, and the introduction equips the reader with an understanding of the text's wider material contexts and historical significance. Of special interest is the novel's representation of womanhood and maternity, itself inflected by wider social changes in countries across Western Europe and Russia during the first two decades of the 20th century.
