Diary of a 17-year-old Massachusetts schoolboy, probably a resident of Jamaica Plain (at that time part of West Roxbury, which was annexed to Boston in 1874). Entries begin 11 June 1860 and end 7 Dec. of the same year. The events recorded have mainly to do with school, his baseball club, home and church activities, trips to Boston and its suburbs by horse car, and a family journey to Cape Cod, staying near Falmouth and returning home via New Bedford. Entries from August to November include frequent references to politics and elections: the Manning family were Lincoln supporters, and George himself was a member of the Jamaica Plain Wide Awakes; he provides accounts of rallies and meetings, the formation of a Lincoln and Hamlin Club, etc.
