Linear and Nonlinear Functional Analysis with Applications

  • Type: Book
  • -
  • Published: 2013-10-10
  • -
  • Publisher: SIAM

This single-volume textbook covers the fundamentals of linear and nonlinear functional analysis, illustrating most of the basic theorems with numerous applications to linear and nonlinear partial differential equations and to selected topics from numerical analysis and optimization theory. This book has pedagogical appeal because it features self-contained and complete proofs of most of the theorems, some of which are not always easy to locate in the literature or are difficult to reconstitute. It also offers 401 problems and 52 figures, plus historical notes and many original references that provide an idea of the genesis of the important results, and it covers most of the core topics from functional analysis.

The objective of Volume III is to lay down the proper mathematical foundations of the two-dimensional theory of shells. To this end, it provides, without any recourse to any a priori assumptions of a geometrical or mechanical nature, a mathematical justification of two-dimensional nonlinear and linear shell theories, by means of asymptotic methods, with the thickness as the "small" parameter.

Renewable Energy Systems in Smart Grid

This book contains peer-reviewed papers from International Conference on Renewable and Clean Energy 2022 (contributions from various authors from all sectors of academia and industries), exploring cutting-edge solutions and best practices for renewable and clean energy technologies for achieving the UN's SDG7 to "ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all." This book presents innovative grid integration technologies for techno-economic operation of renewable and clean energy technologies (e.g., solar photovoltaic, wind energy, hydrogen technologies including electrolyzer and fuel cell, energy storage technologies, etc.). It covers key aspects on energy conve...

Variational Inequalities and Frictional Contact Problems

  • Publisher: Springer

Variational Inequalities and Frictional Contact Problems contains a carefully selected collection of results on elliptic and evolutionary quasi-variational inequalities including existence, uniqueness, regularity, dual formulations, numerical approximations and error estimates ones. By using a wide range of methods and arguments, the results are presented in a constructive way, with clarity and well justified proofs. This approach makes the subjects accessible to mathematicians and applied mathematicians. Moreover, this part of the book can be used as an excellent background for the investigation of more general classes of variational inequalities. The abstract variational inequalities consi...

__________

This book develops a variational method for solving linear equations with $B$-symmetric and $B$-positive operators and generalizes the method to nonlinear equations with nonpotential operators. The author carries out a constructive extension of the variational method to ``nonvariational'' equations (including parabolic equations) in classes of functionals which differ from the Euler-Lagrange functionals. In this connection, some new functions spaces are considered. Intended for mathematicians working in the areas of functional analysis and differential equations, this book would also prove useful for researchers in other areas and students in advanced courses who use variational methods in solving linear and nonlinear boundary value problems in continuum mechanics and theoretical physics.

Mathematical Elasticity

The objective of Theory of Shells, the third book of a three-volume set, is to show how asymptotic methods provide a rigorous mathematical justification of the classical two-dimensional linear shell theories: membrane, generalized membrane, and flexural. The book also shows how asymptotic methods justify nonlinear elastic shell theories and gives a detailed presentation of the Koiter equations for a nonlinearly elastic shell. An extended preface and extensive bibliography have been added to highlight the progress that has been made since the volume’s original publication. While each one of the three volumes is self-contained, together the Mathematical Elasticity set provides the only moder...

Mechanical Systems, Classical Models

Mechanical Systems, Classical Models

All phenomena in nature are characterized by motion. Mechanics deals with the objective laws of mechanical motion of bodies, the simplest form of motion. In the study of a science of nature, mathematics plays an important rôle. Mechanics is the first science of nature which has been expressed in terms of mathematics, by considering various mathematical models, associated to phenomena of the surrounding nature. Thus, its development was influenced by the use of a strong mathematical tool. As it was already seen in the first two volumes of the present book, its guideline is precisely the mathematical model of mechanics. The classical models which we refer to are in fact models based on the Newtonian model of mechanics, that is on its five principles, i.e.: the inertia, the forces action, the action and reaction, the independence of the forces action and the initial conditions principle, respectively. Other models, e.g., the model of attraction forces between the particles of a discrete mechanical system, are part of the considered Newtonian model. Kepler’s laws brilliantly verify this model in case of velocities much smaller then the light velocity in vacuum.

Sobolev Maps to the Circle

Sobolev Maps to the Circle

The theory of real-valued Sobolev functions is a classical part of analysis and has a wide range of applications in pure and applied mathematics. By contrast, the study of manifold-valued Sobolev maps is relatively new. The incentive to explore these spaces arose in the last forty years from geometry and physics. This monograph is the first to provide a unified, comprehensive treatment of Sobolev maps to the circle, presenting numerous results obtained by the authors and others. Many surprising connections to other areas of mathematics are explored, including the Monge-Kantorovich theory in optimal transport, items in geometric measure theory, Fourier series, and non-local functionals occurr...
