Rare Event Simulation using Monte Carlo Methods

Rare Event Simulation using Monte Carlo Methods

In a probabilistic model, a rare event is an event with a very small probability of occurrence. The forecasting of rare events is a formidable task but is important in many areas. For instance a catastrophic failure in a transport system or in a nuclear power plant, the failure of an information processing system in a bank, or in the communication network of a group of banks, leading to financial losses. Being able to evaluate the probability of rare events is therefore a critical issue. Monte Carlo Methods, the simulation of corresponding models, are used to analyze rare events. This book sets out to present the mathematical tools available for the efficient simulation of rare events. Importance sampling and splitting are presented along with an exposition of how to apply these tools to a variety of fields ranging from performance and dependability evaluation of complex systems, typically in computer science or in telecommunications, to chemical reaction analysis in biology or particle transport in physics. Graduate students, researchers and practitioners who wish to learn and apply rare event simulation techniques will find this book beneficial.

Stochastic Processes and Functional Analysis

This volume contains the proceedings of the AMS Special Session on Celebrating M. M. Rao's Many Mathematical Contributions as he Turns 90 Years Old, held from November 9–10, 2019, at the University of California, Riverside, California. The articles show the effectiveness of abstract analysis for solving fundamental problems of stochastic theory, specifically the use of functional analytic methods for elucidating stochastic processes and their applications. The volume also includes a biography of M. M. Rao and the list of his publications.

This book makes the argument that performance modeling and simulation have become central issues in computer science and engineering, in part due to applications to the structures comprising the Internet. Dealing primarily with theory, tools and techniques as related to communications systems, the volume provides tutorials and surveys and relates new important research results. Each chapter presents background information, describes and analyzes important work done in the field and provides direction to the reader on future work and further readings. The topics covered include traffic models for A TM networks, simulation environments, analytical methods, interprocessor communications, and an evaluation of process architectures.

Advances in Modeling and Simulation

This book celebrates the career of Pierre L’Ecuyer on the occasion of his 70th birthday. Pierre has made significant contributions to the fields of simulation, modeling, and operations research over the last 40 years. This book contains 20 chapters written by collaborators and experts in the field who, by sharing their latest results, want to recognize the lasting impact of Pierre’s work in their research area. The breadth of the topics covered reflects the remarkable versatility of Pierre's contributions, from deep theoretical results to practical and industry-ready applications. The Festschrift features article from the domains of Monte Carlo and quasi-Monte Carlo methods, Markov chains, sampling and low discrepancy sequences, simulation, rare events, graphics, finance, machine learning, stochastic processes, and tractability.
