German Culture and the Uncomfortable Past
Beginning with the question of the role of the past in the shaping of a contemporary identity, this volumes spans three generations of German and Austrian writers and explores changes and shifts in the aesthetics of Vergangenheitsbewältigung (coming to terms with the past). The purpose of the book is to assess contemporary German literary representations of National Socialism in a wider context of these current debates. The contributors address questions arising from a shift over the last decade, triggered by a generation change-questions of personal and national identity in Germany and Austria, and the aesthetics of memory. One of the central questions that emerges in relation to the Hitler youth generation is that of biography, as examined through Günter Grass' and Martin Walser's conflicting views on the subject of National Socialism. Other themes explored here are the conflict between the post-war generations and the contributions of that conflict to (West)-German mentality, and the growing historical distance and its influence on the aesthetics of representation.
Violence, Culture and Identity
This volume contains selected papers given at the conference 'Violence, Culture and Identity' held at St Andrews University in 2003. It contributes to the debate on the role of culture in propagating, mediating and controlling violence in society, concentrating on the relationship between culture and identity-formation in Germany and Austria from the Middle Ages to the present. Bringing together the work of twenty-two scholars with expertise in different literary and historical periods, the volume probes the complexities of representations of violence enacted and suffered, of affirmative and non-affirmative violence in text and visual form, revealing the often blurred line between victim and victimizer. Violence in its discursive and material forms is investigated, using the theoretical tools of sociology, post-colonial and gender studies, history and psychology as well as of literary criticism. The collection of essays focuses particularly on the relationship between war and identity, on 1970s terrorism and identity, on violence and the construction of gender, and on contemporary writing in German.
The Portrayal of Jews in GDR Prose Fiction
This volume is the first comprehensive single study of Jewish themes in any of the post-1945 German literatures. It presents literature on Jewish themes by Jewish and non-Jewish authors in the cultural, social and political context of the Soviet Zone/GDR during the entire 45 years of its history from 1945 to 1990. A History of German Literary Criticism, 1730-1980
First published in Germany in 1985, Geschichte der deutschen Literaturkritik was quickly recognized as the most original and comprehensive study to date of a proud critical tradition including such giants as Lessing, Goethe, and Heine. After the Nazis
