Probability Theory

This book is intended as an introduction to Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics for students in mathematics, the physical sciences, engineering, and related fields. It is based on the author’s 25 years of experience teaching probability and is squarely aimed at helping students overcome common difficulties in learning the subject. The focus of the book is an explanation of the theory, mainly by the use of many examples. Whenever possible, proofs of stated results are provided. All sections conclude with a short list of problems. The book also includes several optional sections on more advanced topics. This textbook would be ideal for use in a first course in Probability Theory. Stochastic processes have wide relevance in mathematics both for theoretical aspects and for their numerous real-world applications in various domains. They represent a very active research field which is attracting the growing interest of scientists from a range of disciplines. This Special Issue aims to present a collection of current contributions concerning various topics related to stochastic processes and their applications. In particular, the focus here is on applications of stochastic processes as models of dynamic phenomena in research areas certain to be of interest, such as economics, statistical physics, queuing theory, biology, theoretical neurobiology, and reliability theory. Various contributions dealing with theoretical issues on stochastic processes are also included.

Stochastic Interacting Systems in Life and Social Sciences

This volume provides an overview of two of the most important examples of interacting particle systems, the contact process, and the voter model, as well as their many variants introduced in the past 50 years. These stochastic processes are organized by domains of application (epidemiology, population dynamics, ecology, genetics, sociology, econophysics, game theory) along with a flavor of the mathematical techniques developed for their analysis.

No Need to be Afraid

The story of how Italians struggled to earn the right to live and work amidst an Anglo-Saxon society. It is a story of fear: the Britishers' fear that the 'swarthy' undesirables would threaten their jobs and their way of life; the fear, as WW2 erupted, that Italians might sabotage the war effort and assist the Axis powers to take over Australia.

Computer Aided Systems Theory – EUROCAST 2019

The two-volume set LNCS 12013 and 12014 constitutes the thoroughly refereed proceedings of the 17th International Conference on Computer Aided Systems Theory, EUROCAST 2019, held in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, in February 2019. The 123 full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 172 submissions. The papers are organized in the following topical sections: Part I: systems theory and applications; pioneers and landmarks in the development of information and communication technologies; stochastic models and applications to natural, social and technical systems; theory and applications of metaheuristic algorithms; model-based system design, verification and simulation. Part II: applications of signal processing technology; artificial intelligence and data mining for intelligent transportation systems and smart mobility; computer vision, machine learning for image analysis and applications; computer and systems based methods and electronic technologies in medicine; advances in biomedical signal and image processing; systems concepts and methods in touristic flows; systems in industrial robotics, automation and IoT.

Nonlocal and Fractional Operators

The purpose of this volume is to explore new bridges between different research areas involved in the theory and applications of the fractional calculus. In particular, it collects scientific and original contributions to the development of the theory of nonlocal and fractional operators. Special attention is given to the applications in mathematical physics, as well as in probability. Numerical methods aimed to the solution of problems with fractional differential equations are also treated in the book. The contributions have been presented during the international workshop "Nonlocal and Fractional Operators", held in Sapienza University of Rome, in April 2019, and dedicated to the retirement of Prof. Renato Spigler (University Roma Tre). Therefore we also wish to dedicate this volume to this occasion, in order to celebrate his scientific contributions in the field of numerical analysis and fractional calculus. The book is suitable for mathematicians, physicists and applied scientists interested in the various aspects of fractional calculus.
