The 2013 annual conference of the Italian Society of Agricultural Economics (SIDEA) has been held in the attractive scenario of the city of Lecce under the organization of three different Universities of the Apulia Region (Università degli Studi di Bari, Università degli Studi di Foggia and Università del Salento). The scientific theme of the 50th SIDEA Conference has been “Sustainability of the agri-food system: Strategies and Performances” (Sostenibilità del Sistema Agroalimentare: strategie e performance). With such a topic, the SIDEA intended to cope with the challenges coming from a growing demand of food in a world where critical natural resources such as water, energy and land are becoming increasingly scarce and climate change is posing credible threats. The agri-food system and the broader bio-based economy are, in fact, human activities where the classic dimensions of sustainability (ecological, economic and social) are gaining a striking weight often showing evidence of frictions. Despite a significant growth in food production over the past century, today one of the most important challenges facing agro-food system is how to feed a growing population.
New analysis and empirical evidence on several topics such as the determinants of shape and nature of the vertical relationships in the food system, the determinants of vertical co-ordination and competition, types and mechanisms of co-ordination as well as the consequences for competitiveness, consumer welfare and policy implications are provided. The focus is on vertical issues at different stages of the food chain with a particular emphasis on the increasing role played by retailers in shaping the vertical relationships in the food system through the development of food supply-chain management.

The authors propose a holistic look at the problem of population ageing and global and regional effort to improve the quality of seniors’ life and their families through the integration of healthcare, social care, and senior-friendly environment. They also concentrate on the senior policy of the European Union and the concept of care farming against the backdrop of social farming. Finally, they present the results of the two largest studies under the GROWID project. They investigated older people’s needs against the background of the social services provided by care farms.
Advances in Abdominal Surgery 2002 contains papers from a group of Italian academic surgeons who contribute to a national research program entitled `Progress in Abdominal Surgery'. The research is supported by the Italian Ministry of the University. The primary objective of the group is to combine experimental and clinical approaches in the study of several surgical abdominal diseases. The authors of the individual chapters were requested to present an update in their own fields of research. This volume summarizes several important updates in abdominal surgery and pathophysiology. The contributions are grouped into six sections, namely Surgical Infection, Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic and Splenic Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Fecal Incontinence, Minimally-Invasive Surgery, and Transplantation.
Like much of SMEs research, innovation studies of small enterprises have commenced later and are less numerous. The focus of such studies remains high-technology enterprises, which continue to attract both academic and popular interest, oblivious to the innovative endeavours of people in traditional low-tech industries. This book attempts to address this imbalance through a comprehensive analysis of innovation in this largely neglected area. Based on case studies of seven small innovative food companies, this book presents an in-depth analysis of innovation in the Scottish food and drinks industry and unravels a lesser-known approach to effective low-cost product innovation, which is simple and economical, yet elegant and successful. Using careful data collection and rigorous statistical testing, the analysis and findings in this book address a wide spectrum of interests: academics in business schools, policy makers in governments and executives and entrepreneurs in food and other low-technology sectors.
