Currents of Destiny is the first book of a trilogy depicting the saga of two families and their enthralling trajectory across four continents, spanning over a century and several generations. The 366 pages of this first book reveal a panorama of life that includes the heights of joy as well as the depths of despair in places both distant and mysterious as well as near and familiar, evoking new perspectives to the problems of our fast changing society and reminding us that in some ways we've hardly changed at all.
In the late 1960s, Brazilian artists forged a watershed cultural movement known as Tropicalia. Music inspired by that movement is today enjoying considerable attention at home and abroad. Few new listeners, however, make the connection between this music and the circumstances surrounding its creation, the most violent and repressive days of the military regime that governed Brazil from 1964 to 1985. With key manifestations in theater, cinema, visual arts, literature, and especially popular music, Tropicalia dynamically articulated the conflicts and aspirations of a generation of young, urban Brazilians. Focusing on a group of musicians from Bahia, an impoverished state in northeastern Brazil...
A story of boys who went to school together from 1954 to 1971 at the Ateneo de Manila University. They are ADMU 198 (the sum of GS62, HS66, Coll70, and BSME71). Classmates who joined them for at least a year but graduated ahead, behind or not at all have also been included as part of ADMU 198. This is their composite autobiography, if there is such a genre. They contributed their respective recollections and impressions, and these were pooled together in what is hopefully a meaningful whole. I totally wash my hands of responsibility for anything libelous, scandalous, obscene, depraved, coarse, tasteless, irreverent, inane, opinionated, seditious or anything that is simply outrageous, and worth distancing one's self from. I was initially made editor or coordinator of this project under duress and in the absence of my own free will. I would have quit if only it was not so much fun to engage in such muck.
Cranky Mary Ryan has sunk a lot of time and talent into the American Fare, San Francisco's hottest spot, while grieving over her broken marriage. At work very early, she steps on a laundry bag stuffed with the dead body of one of her employees. The investigation soon exposes all the dirty secrets that the food business would like to keep secret: the philandering chefs, the silly whims of the dining public, the hiring of illegal aliens, and the subsistence-living pay scale. Events begin to spiral that in time take out the restaurant's celebrity chef and force Mary to use her unique skills to uncover a poisonous scheme. Beat Until Stiff is the first book in the Mary Ryan series.
