Minimally Invasive Surgery in Orthopedics

Minimally invasive surgery has evolved as an alternative to the traditional approaches in orthopedic surgery and has gathered a great deal of attention. Many surgeons are now p- forming all types of procedures through smaller surgical felds. Along with changes in the surgical technique, there have been rapid advances in computer navigation and robotics as tools to enhance the surgeon’s vision in the limited operative felds. With these new techniques and technologies, we must ensure that these procedures are performed safely and effectively with predictable clinical outcomes. This book has been expanded from our previous publi- tions to include spine and foot and ankle surgery, along with u...

MIS of the Hip and the Knee

This is a new and exciting period in orthopedic surgery. Times are cha- ing,and we are developing techniques to perform joint arthroplasty through smaller and smaller incisions in an effort to reduce the amount of int- operative trauma and expedite the path to recovery. Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) leads to shorter hospital stays with quicker recoveries. The procedures may eventually be performed on an outpatient basis with an earlier return to daily activities and work. We have asked the leading world authorities in this ?eld of orthopaedics to contribute their ideas on these new techniques. Because so much of the technology is new, the authors cannot present signi?cant long-term foll- ...

Covering both primary and revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA), each technique-oriented chapter in this book opens with a clinical case and an overview of the challenges and multiple options for management, and each section within the chapter will describe the physical exam, surgical approach, clinical outcome and recent supporting literature. Chapters will utilize bullet points for quick reference and plentiful intra-operative photos to illustrate the various techniques described. Part one covers primary TKA, with cases demonstrating management strategies for the varus and valgus knee, flexion contracture, patellofemoral arthritis, and extra-articular deformity, among others, while part two covers revision TKA, with cases demonstrating acute infection, flexion and global instability, severe tibial and femoral bone loss, and periprosthetic fracture, among others. Written and edited by experts in the field, Complex Cases In Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Collection of Current Techniques will be a useful reference for orthopedic surgeons, residents and fellows as well as sports medicine specialists and anyone involved in surgical care of the knee.

The Patella

The problems of the patellofemoral joint remain a challenge to the orthopaedic surgeon. In spite of many articles in scientific journals, an outstanding monograph, and several excellent textbook chapters, the patella is still an enigma in many respects. The etiology of patellar pain is controversial, and there is no completely satisfying explanation for its cause or its relationship to chondromalacia. Curiously, neither the widespread use of arthroscopy nor the advent of newer diagnostic tests such as CT scanning and magnetic resonance imaging have cast much light. Without a better understanding of why patellar disorders occur it is not surprising that there is no consensus on how to fix them. Arthros copy has contributed little except to the patient's psyche. The currently most popular surgical treatment for recurrent dislocation of the patella was first described 50 years ago. One concrete advance, albeit a small one, is a better understanding of the role of anatomical abnormalities and patellofemoral dysplasia in patellar instabilities. It gives me great pleasure that many of the contributors are, like Dr.
