This volume treats the key aspects that must be known when dealing with continuous space geodetic or terrestrial geodetic observations. The signals of Earth core resonance are discussed, as well as tidal effects on Earth polar motion and on earthquake triggering. Hydrologic loading, be it ocean tides or subsurface water flows, is discussed. These signals compete with crustal deformation observations of earthquakes (e.g., Gorkha 2015) during interseismic periods, and on volcanoes (Elbrus, Caucasus). The instrumentation that is covered includes superconducting gravimeters, continuous seafloor gravimeters, interferometric tilt and strain meters, and GNSS networks. The articles give an up-to-date account of research in which the Earth tides are a benchmark signal for the sophisticated instrumentation mounted on satellites or the surface, observing time-variable signals of an evolving Earth. Scientists studying the earthquake cycle and geodetic monitoring will find useful material. For students in the geosciences, the collection offers a good overview of the broad spectrum of topics related to the Earth geodetic monitoring.
Every so often a gathering of minds and experience occurs that results in an all encompassing overview in depth of such a vast subject as Cerebro-Vascular Malformations, as occurred in Verona in June 1992 and which warrants publication. Professors Da Pian and Pasqualin deserve high compliment and it is a measure of the respect in which they are held that virtually all those most knowledgeable around the world attended, presented their work and thoughts and contributed to intense discussion. Ljunggren's opening historical survey set the stage and must be the most comprehensive yet published. Subarachnoid hemorrhage from aneurysm rupture still constitutes, I dare say, the most difficult proble...

The ICTCA conference provides an interdisciplinary forum for active researchers in academia and industry who are of varying backgrounds to discuss the state-of-the-art developments and results in theoretical and computational acoustics and related topics. The papers presented at the meeting cover acoustical problems of common interest across disciplines and their accurate mathematical and numerical modelling. The present book collects papers that were presented at the 4th meeting and printed in the Journal of Computational Acoustics. There are about 120 full research articles on various subjects, such as wave propagation theory and numerical modelling, sound propagation, vibrations and noise generation, underwater acoustics, engineering seismology, ultrasonic field synthesis and modelling, as well as computational methods, inverse problems and tomography, shallow water acoustics and environmental/bottom parameter extraction. A CD-Rom is attached that allows readers to browse through articles and print those of interest to them.
Submarine mass movements represent major offshore geohazards due to their destructive and tsunami-generation potential. This potential poses a threat to human life as well as to coastal, nearshore and offshore engineering structures. Recent examples of catastrophic submarine landslide events that affected human populations (including tsunamis) are numerous; e.g., Nice airport in 1979, Papua-New Guinea in 1998, Stromboli in 2002, Finneidfjord in 1996, and the 2006 and 2009 failures in the submarine cable network around Taiwan. The Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011 also generated submarine landslides that may have amplified effects of the devastating tsunami. Given that 30% of the Worl...
The book is a collection of original research and review articles addressing the intriguing field of the cellular and molecular players involved in muscle homeostasis and regeneration. One of the most ambitious aspirations of modern medical science is the possibility of regenerating any damaged part of the body, including skeletal muscle. This desire has prompted clinicians and researchers to search for innovative technologies aimed at replacing organs and tissues that are compromised. In this context, the papers, collected in this book, addressing a specific aspects of muscle homeostasis and regeneration under physiopathologic conditions, will help us to better understand the underlying mechanisms of muscle healing and will help to design more appropriate therapeutic approaches to improve muscle regeneration and to counteract muscle diseases.
This volume provides leading-edge protocols in the study of the molecular and cellular biology of muscle stem cells. Chapters detail current and updated methods for muscle stem cell isolation, culture, molecular analysis, cellular analysis, and reintroduction in vivo as well as protocols for studying myogenic stem cells in non-mammalian model systems. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and cutting-edge, Muscle Stem Cells: Methods and Protocols aims to ensure successful results in the further study of this vital field.
This book provides the latest research on and applications of advanced GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) and 3D spatial techniques in the fields of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Geophysics, Architecture, Archaeology and Cultural Heritage. It offers an updated reference guide on the above-mentioned topics for undergraduate and graduate students, PhDs, researchers, professionals and practitioners alike.
