When a certain Mark Anthony of the famous Italian family of the Roveres arrived in Agen, in SW France, in the second decade of the 16th century, he brought along with him his personal physician, Master Julius Caesar, who had been under the protection of his family for some time. This latter was a majestic-looking man of some 40 years of age who was to become renowned as one of the greatest scholars of the Renaissance. Indeed, so great became his fame in all branches of learning that it was for long considered that he was the greatest scholar who had ever dwelt in France. Since Jacob Burckhardt's Kultur der Renaissance in Italien (1869) rhetoric as a significant cultural factor of the renaissance has largely been neglected. The present study seeks to remedy this deficit regarding the arts by concentrating on literary theory and its aspects of imagination (inventio), genre (dispositio of the genera), style (elocutio), mnemonic architecture (memoria) and representation (actio), with illustrative examples taken from Shakespeare's works, but also on the intermedial rhetoric of painting and music. Particular attention is given to the rhetorical ideology of the Renaissance.
This study explores a prominent Italian Renaissance theme, the origin of genius, revealing how the coalescence of a Platonic theory of divine frenzy and an Aristotelian theory of melancholy genius eventually disintegrated under the force of late Renaissance events.
