Explores the "body of art and literature that has been inspired and informed by the reclamation of knowledge of ancient Goddess reverence and the rise of women's spirituality from within the feminist movement" -- p. ix.
These sixteen illustrated essays present an important revision of surrealism by focusing on the works of women surrealists and their strategies to assert positions as creative subjects within a movement that regarded woman primarily as an object of masculine desire or fear. While the male surrealists attacked aspects of the bourgeois order, they reinforced the traditional patriarchal image of woman. Their emphasis on dreams, automatic writing, and the unconscious reveal some of the least inhibited masculine fantasies. The first resistance to the male surrealists' projection of the female figure arose in the writings and paintings of marginalized woman artists and writers associated with Surre...
There are a number of participant accounts of the revival of Goddess religion among feminists in Europe, America and Australasia. But students and others interested in issues in the relation of religion, theo/alogy and gender need an accessible and concise critical overview of this contemporary religious phenomenon and its discourses. Introducing Thealogy, which offers a contextual analysis of the thealogy, ontology, historiography and ethics of various types of Goddess feminism, is designed to meet that need.
The Sister Chapel (1974-78) was an important collaborative installation that materialized at the height of the women?s art movement. Conceived as a nonhierarchical, secular commemoration of female role models, The Sister Chapel consisted of an eighteen-foot abstract ceiling that hung above a circular arrangement of eleven monumental canvases, each depicting the standing figure of a heroic woman. The choice of subject was left entirely to the creator of each work. As a result, the paintings formed a visually cohesive group without compromising the individuality of the artists. Contemporary and historical women, deities, and conceptual figures were portrayed by distinguished New York painters-...
Finding Our Way is a well-written, clear introduction to a range of ecofeminist thought. In four essays, Biehl explores ecofeminism's intellectual affinities with social ecology and other schools of thought; critiques the increasing role of Goddess mythology within today's movement; spiritedly defends reason and naturalism against what she sees as a "counter-Enlightenment" mentality within feminist and academic circles; and mines the Western democratic tradition for its relevant political insights for feminists today.
In 1970, Judy Chicago and fifteen students founded the groundbreaking Feminist Art Program (FAP) at Fresno State. Drawing upon the consciousness-raising techniques of the women's liberation movement, they created shocking new art forms depicting female experiences. Collaborative work and performance art – including the famous "Cunt Cheerleaders" – were program hallmarks. Moving to Los Angeles, the FAP produced the first major feminist art installation, Womanhouse (1972). Augmented by thirty-seven illustrations and color plates, this interdisciplinary collection of essays by artists and scholars, many of whom were eye witnesses to landmark events, relates how feminists produced vibrant bo...
