The Yearbook Commercial Arbitration continues its longstanding commitment to serving as a primary resource for the international arbitration community, with reports on arbitral awards and court decisions applying the leading arbitration conventions and decisions of general interest to the practice of international arbitration as well as announcements of arbitration legislation and rules. Volume XLVI (2021) includes: • excerpts of arbitral awards made under the auspices of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and the Cairo Regional Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (CRCICA), as well as awards rendered in accordance with the rules of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce (SC...
The eighth-century English missionary and church reformer Boniface was a highly influential figure in early medieval Europe. His career in what is now Germany, France, and the Netherlands is attested in an exceptional number of textual sources: a correspondence of 150 letters, Latin poetry, church council records, and other documents. Numerous saints’ lives and modern devotional materials further reveal how he was and is remembered by the religious communities that claim him as a foundational figure. This volume comprises the latest scholarship on Boniface and his fellow missionaries, examining the written materials associated with Boniface, his impacts on the regions of Europe where he worked (Hessia, Thuringia, Bavaria, Frisia, and Francia), and the development of his cult in the Middle Ages and today. Contributors: Michel Aaij, John-Henry Clay, Michael Glatthaar, Shannon Godlove, Leanne Good, Petra Kehl, Felice Lifshitz, Rob Meens, Michael Edward Moore, Marco Mostert, James Palmer, Janneke Raaijmakers, Rudolf Schieffer, Emily Thornbury, Siegfried Weichlein, and Barbara Yorke.
The history of postwar German cinema has most often been told as a story of failure, a failure paradoxically epitomized by the remarkable popularity of film throughout the late 1940s and 1950s. Through the analysis of 10 representative films, Hester Baer reassesses this period, looking in particular at how the attempt to 'dismantle the dream factory' of Nazi entertainment cinema resulted in a new cinematic language which developed as a result of the changing audience demographic. In an era when female viewers comprised 70 per cent of cinema audiences a 'women's cinema' emerged, which sought to appeal to female spectators through its genres, star choices, stories and formal conventions. In addition to analyzing the formal language and narrative content of these films, Baer uses a wide array of other sources to reconstruct the original context of their reception, including promotional and publicity materials, film programs, censorship documents, reviews and spreads in fan magazines. This book presents a new take on an essential period, which saw the rebirth of German cinema after its thorough delegitimization under the Nazi regime.
A revisionist account of the effects of the Enlightenment process on German Benedictines which contributes to a better understanding not only of monastic culture in Central Europe, but also of Catholic religious culture in general.
Highlights the social and textual complexity of the transatlantic world for American women writers
In the twentieth century, dyes, pharmaceuticals, photographic products, explosives, insecticides, fertilizers, synthetic rubber, fuels, and fibers, plastics, and other products have flowed out of the chemical industry and into the consumer economies, war machines, farms, and medical practices of industrial societies. The German chemical industry has been a major site for the development and application of the science-based technologies that gave rise to these products, and has had an important role as exemplar, stimulus, and competitor in the international chemical industry. This volume explores the German chemical industry's scientific and technological dimension, its international connections, and its development after 1945. The authors relate scientific and technological change in the industry to evolving German political and economic circumstances, including two world wars, the rise and fall of National Socialism, the post-war division of Germany, and the emergence of a global economy. This book will be of interest to historians of modern Germany, to historians of science and technology, and to business and economic historians.
While online learning continues to be a rapidly expanding field of research, analyzing data allows educational institutions to fine tune their curriculum and teaching methods. Properly utilizing the data, however, becomes difficult when taking into account how socio-technical systems are used, the administration of those systems, default settings, how data is described and captured, and other factors. Methods for Analyzing and Leveraging Online Learning Data is a pivotal reference source that provides vital research on the application of data in online education for improving a system’s capabilities and optimizing it for teaching and learning. This publication explores data handling, clean...
Polymer Science: A Materials Science Handbook, Volume 2 focuses on the chemical structures of polymers, as well as the processes of friction and wear, adhesion, radiation, spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance. The handbook first tackles the processes of adhesion and friction and wear, including factors affecting adhesion, theories of adhesion, and interfacial and cohesive failure. The book also reviews polymer solutions and fractionation, polyelectrolytes, and electrical properties of polymers. The publication takes a look at the dielectric properties of polymers and far infrared spectra of polymers. Discussions focus on the basic theory of dielectric behavior of small molecules; molecular theories of relaxation in polymers; dielectric behavior and relaxation of polymer solutions; theory of the absorption and dispersion of electromagnetic waves in condensed media; and absorption spectroscopy in the far infrared. The text also reviews nuclear magnetic resonance, radiation effects in polymers, and identification and analysis of plastic materials. The handbook is a dependable reference for readers interested in polymer science.
