Lepidoptera from the Boreal Mixedwood Forest in East-central Alberta

This report describes a study conducted as part of research on biota associated with specific forest successional stages and, in particular, to identify taxa that might be strongly linked to old stands. Lepidoptera were chosen for the study because they serve important roles as herbivores, pollinators, & prey; are easily collected; are sensitive to forest disturbances; and are well enough known taxonomically for their diversity to be assessed. A baseline examination of this assemblage was carried out in a mature stand and an old stand near Lac La Biche, Alberta. Comparisons between the two stands are made with regard to temporal & within-stand variability in moth species composition, variability associated with stand age, & species associated with a particular stand. In addition, the potential for Lepidoptera and its taxonomic sub-groups to serve as biodiversity indicators in the boreal forest was examined.

"Moths and butterflies (Lepidoptera) are one of the most diverse and economically important groups of insects, with approximately 157,000 species worldwide. This book establishes a definitive list of the species that occur in BC, and clarifies erroneous records in past works. It provides a knowledge baseline that will be useful to resource and conservation managers, biodiversity researchers, taxonomists, amateur collectors, and naturalists."--Back cover.

All the described butterfly and moth (Lepidoptera) species that are known to occur in Canada, Greenland, and the continental United States of America are listed. We have endeavored to include information from all publications up to the end of December 2022, as well as from a few publications that were in press at that time. All valid scientific names, from order to subspecies, are presented following the most recent available classification. For all species-level names, the current genus, species name, author, date, and original genus are listed. All available (and many unavailable) synonyms are listed, as well as hundreds of misspellings, emendations, misidentifications, and misapplied names published in the past century. In total, over 36,700 taxon names are included in the list.

Do you dream of a city at the end of time? In a time like the present, on a world that may or may not be our own, three young people - Ginny, Jack, and Daniel - dream of a fabulous, decadent city in the distant future: the Kalpa. The dreams of Ginny and Jack overtake them without warning, leaving their bodies behind while carrying their consciousnesses forward, into the minds of two inhabitants of the Kalpa - a would-be warrior, Jebrassy, and an inquisitive explorer, Tiadba - who have been genetically retroengineered to possess qualities of ancient humanity. In turn, the dreams of Tiadba and Jebrassy carry them back, into the minds of Jack and Ginny. As for Daniel: he dreams of an empty darkness - all his future holds. But more than dreams link Ginny, Jack, and Daniel. They are fate-shifters, born with the ability to skip like stones across the surface of the fifth dimension, inhabiting alternate versions of themselves. And they are each guardians of an object whose origins and purpose are unknown, a gnarled, stony artifact called a sum-runner that persists unchanged through all versions of time. They can save the future, but they are being hunted down.
