Romanian Salt Tolerant Plants

The potential use of salt tolerant plants in the context of future agriculture strictly requires a good knowledge of species that might be used as crops or other resources; understanding their salt tolerance mechanisms and ecology also would be a sine qua non condition for introducing these taxa in agricultural practices.

Halophytes: An Integrative Anatomical Study

This book focuses on morphological and anatomical strategies developed by halophytes during evolution that allow them to survive in high-salt environments. These adaptive strategies refer to well integrated structural features, such as succulence, salt secretion (salt glands and vesicular hairs), aerenchyma, Kranz anatomy, bulliform cells, successive cambia, tracheoidioblasts and endodermis with pronounced Casparian strips. The authors present cross sections of the roots, stems and leaves of 62 halophyte species belonging to 18 families from different habitats and climates (temperate, Mediterranean). They also discuss the ecological, physiological and evolutionary aspects of the various adaptive structures in an integrative way. Beginning with the structural level, this book offers novel insights into the ecology of halophytes and opens new perspectives for the identification of salt-tolerant crop plants or halophytes that can be used for ecological purposes, such as bio-remediation and revegetation.

Halophytic Plants for Animal Feed: Associated Botanical and Nutritional Characteristics

Halophytic plants are a fascinating group of plants that also serve as dietary feed for livestock. Their utilization is essential for sustainable agriculture and maintaining ecological balance. This book explains the nature of halophytic plants through an in-depth presentation of their botanical and nutritional characteristics. Chapters of the book highlight different aspects of halophytes on a botanical, histological, ecological and nutritional basis when utilized as animal feed components. The issues of the histo-chemical aspects of halophytes are addressed with regard to their impact on nutrient compositions and availability to animals, while the important nutrient contents of halophytes ...

This book contains current knowledge and the most recent developments in the field of halophyte biology, ecology, and potential uses. Halophytes are characterized as plants that can survive and complete their life cycle in highly saline environments. This book explores the adaptive mechanisms and special features of halophytes that allow them to grow in environments that are unsuitable for conventional crops and considers their role as a source of food, fuel, fodder, fiber, essential oils, and medicines. Halophytes and Climate Change includes coverage of: - Special morphological, anatomical, and physiological features of halophytes - Ion accumulation patterns and homeostasis in halophytes - Potential use of halophytes in the remediation of saline soil - Growth and physiological response and tolerance to toxicity and drought - Mangrove ecology, physiology, and adaptation Written by a team of international authors and presented in full color, this book is an essential resource for researchers in the fields of plant physiology, ecology, soil science, environmental science, botany, and agriculture.

MORFOLOGIA PLANTELOR

Halophytes

Ecological anatomy approach involves a correlation between structure and habitat, between certain well-defined anatomical adaptations and some environmental factors such as salinity, soil moisture or dryness. In some cases, finding such correlations has been proved facile, while in other cases, some anatomical adaptations remain controversial, because their function is not fully elucidated.

Structuri secretoare de saruri la halofite.

This book represents an anatomical monograph of one of the most important strategies of halophytes’ life, namely, the secretion of salts in excess outside of body plant affected by high salinity in the soil. The work focuses primarily on reviewing the salt-secreting structures of almost all halophytes genera and species, where is well established that these adaptive mechanisms are present. First of all, it was necessary to discuss some very interesting and controversial theoretical issues regarding the terminology used for these secreting salts structures and their classification. Our intention at this level was to put order into the existing classifications by proposing a classification based on structural, anatomical criteria. This is because the language used abroad is not uniform, but heterogeneous and not based on anatomical criteria, but mainly on the functional one. There is no uniformity neither in salt-secreting structures definitions; we often found that there is confusion and even arbitrary in use of terms which are not synonymous, although the boundary between them is sometimes very fragile.
