Byer og steder verden over blir stadig mer like. Bare ved å forstå betydningen av stedets ikke-målbare kvaliteter, kan vi ta vare på historiens arkitektur og finne frem til en ny arkitektur som tilhører fellesskapet. Den norske arkitekten og stedstenkeren Christian Norberg-Schulz (1926-2000) sto i fremste rekke når det gjaldt å tydeliggjøre hvor viktig det er å se bygninger som del av en lokal stedshelhet, og ikke som en samling enkeltobjekter.Ni tekster skrevet av arkitekter, filosofer og en statsviter søker å bidra til et nytt offentlig ordskifte om en filosofisk-antropologisk fundert stedstilhørighet. Videre å bidra til å bygge ned noen av de skillene som finnes mellom arkitekturfaglig praksis og teori innenfor dagens utdanningssystem, og skillet mellom arkitekturfaglig praksis og kulturminnevern.
