Vilhelm Krag (1871-1933) er nyromantikkens gjennombruddsmann i vår litteratur. Som attenåring ble han berømt da hans eksotiske dikt "Fandango" ble opplest i Studentersamfundet, og med debutboka "Digte" ble han "konge for en dag, ja for et langt lyrisk år", skrev kritikeren Carl Nærup. I alt skrev han 43 bøker med dikt, prosa og skuespill. I hele sitt liv var han en av landets markante personligheter, denne Alexander Kiellands uønskede svigersønn, aristokratisk, morsbundet og periodemelankoliker, språkrøkter, forsvarsvenn og kommunisthater, formann i Den norske Forfatterforening, sjef for Nationaltheatret og hovedkonsulent for Aschehoug. Men til tross for at han skrev sine muntre sørlandsviser, ble hans liv på mange måter en tragedie. I denne biografien gir Gunvald Opstad et nærgående portrett av dikteren, der både hans humoristiske og tragiske sider kommer til syne. Illustrert med bilder i både sv/hv og farger.
