One of the main goals in fisheries governance is to promote viability and sustainability in small-scale fishing communities. This is not an easy task given external and internal pressure, including environmental change and competition with other economic sectors searching for development in the coastal region. A comprehensive understanding of small-scale fisheries in their own context, and from a regional perspective, is an important step in supporting the implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines on Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries (SSF Guidelines). This book contributes to the global effort by offering knowledge, insights and lessons about small-scale fisheries in Latin America ...

This book comes out of the 12th Iberoamerican Congress of Food Engineering, which took place at the University of Algarve in Faro, Portugal in July 2019. It includes the editors' selection of the best research works from oral and poster presentations delivered at the conference. The first section is dedicated to research carried out on SUSTAINABLE ALTERNATIVES TO CHEMICAL ADDITIVES TO EXTEND SHELF LIFE, with special emphasis on animal products. The second section discusses recent research in SUSTAINABLE NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT. The third section delves into the development of PLANT-BASED ALTERNATIVES TO DAIRY AND GLUTEN BASED CEREALS. The fourth section tackles CONSUMER BEHAVIOR regarding food products with new sources of protein (e.g. insects) or new sources of important nutrients (e.g. seaweeds) and the fifth discusses the VALORIZATION OF BY-PRODUCTS IN THE FOOD INDUSTRY (from fruits and wine making). For food engineers, food technologists, and food scientists looking to stay up-to-date in this field of sustainable food engineering, Sustainable Innovation in Food Product Design is the ideal resource.
Neoliberalism changed the face of Latin America and left average citizens struggling to cope in many ways. Popular sectors were especially hard hit as wages declined and unemployment increased. The backlash to neoliberalism in the form of popular protest and electoral mobilization opened space for leftist governments to emerge. The turn to left governments raised popular expectations for a second wave of incorporation. Although a growing literature has analyzed many aspects of left governments, there is no study of how the redefinition of the organized popular sectors, their allies, and their struggles have reshaped the political arena to include their interests—until now. This volume examines the role played in the second wave of incorporation by political parties, trade unions, and social movements in five cases: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, and Venezuela. The cases shed new light on a subject critical to understanding the change in the distribution of political power related to popular sectors and their interests—a key issue in the study of postneoliberalism.
