Alchemy in Contemporary Art analyzes the manner in which twentieth-century artists, beginning with French Surrealists of the 1920s, have appropriated concepts and imagery from the western alchemical tradition. This study examines artistic production from c. 1920 to the present, with an emphasis on the 1970s to 2000, discussing familiar names such as Andre Breton, Salvador Dali, Yves Klein, Joseph Beuys, and Anselm Kiefer, as well as many little known artists of the later twentieth century. It provides a critical overview of the alchemical tradition in twentieth-century art, and of the use of occultist imagery as a code for political discourse and polemical engagement. The study is the first to examine the influence of alchemy and the Surrealist tradition on Australian as well as on Eastern European and Mexican art. In addition, the text considers the manner in which women artists such as Leonora Carrington, Remedios Varo, and Rebecca Horn have critically revised the traditional sexist imagery of alchemy and occultism for their own feminist purposes.
The transnational modernist Mina Loy (1882–1966) embodied the avant-garde in many literary and artistic media. This book positions her as a theorist of the avant-garde and of what it means to be an artist. Foregrounding Loy’s critical interrogation of Futurist, Dadaist, Surrealist, and “Degenerate” artisthood, and exploring her poetic legacies today, Curious Disciplines reveals Loy’s importance in an entirely novel way. Examining the primary texts produced by those movements themselves—their manifestos, magazines, pamphlets, catalogues, and speeches—Sarah Hayden uses close readings of Loy’s poetry, prose, polemics, and unpublished writings to trace her response to how these movements wrote themselves, collectively, into being.
American-born artist Lee Miller (1907-1977) has been increasingly championed by scholars and curators for her Surrealism-inspired photographs. Her captivating images of Paris in the late 1920s and early 1930s, her dreamlike portraits of desert landscapes and sexually suggestive architecture taken in Egypt in the mid-1930s, and her witty, yet often disturbing, photographs of the Second World War and its aftermath have been widely discussed. However, while popular interest in Miller’s colourful life and photographic work has been rapidly growing during the past forty years, her true worth as a prominent Surrealist artist has been somewhat overlooked. This new collection of essays addresses this issue, revalidating Lee Miller’s Surrealist position, not simply as a muse, friend, and collaborator with the Surrealists, but as one of the twentieth century’s most important and influential female Surrealist artists.
