Patrice Lumumba (1925 - 1961), erster Ministerpräsident der unabhängigen Demokratischen Republik Kongo, wurde von katangesischen Soldaten im Jahre 1961 getötet, weil Belgien einen Machtverlust in der ehemaligen Kolonie fürchtete. Die Beteiligung Belgiens an diesem politisch motivierten Mord konnte bis 1999 verschleiert werden, weshalb eine offizielle Aufarbeitung des Todesfalls lange Zeit ausblieb. Die Erinnerung an Lumumba erfolgte v. a. in kulturellen Diskursen. Dieses Buch bietet eine fundierte literaturwissenschaftliche Analyse der literarischen Repräsentation von Patrice Lumumba im frankophonen belgischen Drama und in der kongolesischen Lyrik in französischer Sprache. Die Arbeit versucht dabei, die Postkoloniale Literaturtheorie zu aktualisieren und neu zu verorten.

Symbolisme et réalités africaines dans l'œuvre romanesque de Tchicaya UTam'si
L'écrivain congolais Tchicaya UTam'si (1931-1988) - qui est poète, dramaturge, romancier et nouvelliste - est marqué par la tradition orale et les mouvements socio-politiques de son pays et du continent africain. L'histoire de l'oeuvre tchicayenne débuta dès les années 1954-1955. Son cycle romanesque reconstitue la Geste du peuple de l'ancien royaume de Loango qui commença depuis le dix-neuvième siècle et le temps de la colonisation. C'est une sorte de saga congolaise, peinture impressionniste du quotidien se référant à la colonisation. Elle nous décrit une société bloquée prise dans un malaise, le mal d'être, le mal de vivre, reniement de son dieu etc. Ce livre est la première étude sur les symboles utilisés par l'auteur et la réalité qui se développe à travers son écriture.

Das Zögern, afrikanische Romane in französischer Sprache mit literaturwissenschaftlichen Methoden zu untersuchen, liegt in der weitverbreiteten Überzeugung begründet, daß eine Analyse unter diesem Aspekt unangemessen sei, da die Gattung Roman eine nicht indigene, sondern importierte Kunstform ist. Darüber hinaus wehren sich viele afrikanische Schriftsteller gegen einen literaturkritischen Zugriff mit dem Argument, westliche Terminologien und Methoden könnten afrikanischer Ästhetik nicht gerecht werden. Die vorliegende Studie kommt nun der Forderung von Janheinz Jahn nach und stellt den «Aspekt, der Literatur zu Literatur macht», in den Mittelpunkt. Sie bedient sich unterschiedlichster Methoden, ohne allerdings der normativen Bewertung westlicher Literaturkritik zu folgen. Auf diese Weise wird evident, wie afrikanische Romane in europäischer Sprache den Erwartungen afrikanischer Leser entgegenkommen und wie afrikanisches Denken und Empfinden Form und Gehalt des frankophonen Romans bestimmen.
