In dem Roman erzählt der Autor die wechselvolle Geschichte einer Bauernfamilie während des Zweiten Weltkriegs und der Zeit danach. Er führt dem Leser die sie seelisch belastende Untreue einer jungen Ehefrau vor Augen, ihre für sie unerklärliche Liebe zu zwei Männern und ihre quälenden Zweifel, ob sie sich ihrem Ehemann offenbaren soll, der alsbald nach dem gewaltsamen Tod des französischen Gefangenen aus dem Militärdienst entlassen wird, aber auch die allmähliche Wandlung ihres Vaters, eines zunächst überzeugten Nationalsozialisten zu ihrem inneren Gegner, der jedoch aus Angst um seine Familie weiterhin als Bürgermeister seines Dorfes, als Ortsgruppenleiter und Ortsbauernführer eine Linientreue heuchelt und bis zum bitteren Ende so weiter macht wie bisher, obwohl er inzwischen erkannt hat, dass er bereits seit 1934 auch als Angehöriger der SA einem verbrecherischen Regime gedient hat. Der Autor lässt den Leser aber auch teilhaben an mehreren tragischen Kriegsereignissen und dramatischen Erlebnissen der Familie Brammer unmittelbar vor Kriegsende und in den unsicheren Monaten danach.
