The International Ergonomics Association (IEA) is currently developing standards for Ergonomic Quality in Design (EQUID) which primarily intends to promote ergonomics principles and the adaptation of a process approach for the development of products, work systems and services. It is important to assess the ergonomic quality of products, hand-held tools and computer input devices through working processes that represent reality. Well-designed working tools can be expected to reduce or eliminate fatigue, discomfort, accidents and health problems and they can lead to improvements in productivity and quality. Furthermore, absenteeism, job turnover and training costs can positively be influenced...

Highlights and setbacks, victories and defeats, emotional moments in the Race Across America (RAAM), anecdotes of 24-hour world records and other races—all this and much more are found in the autobiography of Christoph Strasser, today's most successful ultra-cyclist. The Austrian gives an insight into his world of thoughts and emotions, he says: "The joy in reaching a goal lasts only briefly, real satisfaction comes in the small daily steps on the way there." "The book is not a motivational guide, but an open, honest biography with many insights behind the scenes of RAAM. Above all, I want to shed more light on my weaknesses, and the roadblocks I faced—because these ultimately led me to continually look for improvements. And I want to share my message that as a "normal" person, you can achieve unimaginable things." "Strasser's Road - The Story of the Record-Setting Race Across America Winner" goes beyond the usual epic hero/sports biography; it teaches about goals, about achievements, and the many steps, joys, failures, and successes along the way.

Determinants and Controls of Scientific Development

This book constitutes the outcome of an international conference held at the Otto-Mobes-Volkswirtschaftsschule, Graz-Stifting( Austria), from June 16 to 22, 1974. The conference was initiated by a project group working on determinants and controls of social science development at the In stitute for Advanced Studies and Scientific Research in Vienna and or ganized by the editors of this volume. It was held under the auspices of the Austrian Ministry of Science and Research. The main topics of the conference were those at the forefront of the 'state of argumentation' (to borrow from one of our contributors) in philosophy and sociology of science ever since the controversy between Thomas S. Kuh...

Advances in Ergometry

Exercise testing is widely used all over the world to assess functional capacity in athletes, healthy subjects and patients. According to recent surveys, the interest in ergometry is still growing in almost all fields of medicine, especially in private practice. Furthermore, there has been an exponential growth in the number of publications on exercise testing in the last years. Several consensus and task force conferences have dealt with exercise testing and published recommendations on standardization and guidelines in ergometry. These factors have, in combination, initiated an upsurge in research and clinical use of exercise testing. At the 6th International Seminar on Ergometry the lates...

In occupational safety and health acts, ordinances, regulations, directives, standards and guidelines, A-weighted sound exposures, varying in level and duration, are traditionally converted to an 8-hour-average sound level by applying the 3-dB exchange rate. Under the prerequisite that the energy equivalent rating level does not exceed 85 dB(A)/8 h, even impulse noise exposures of up to 140 dB are declared harmless. Indeed, the mutual settlement of level and duration based on the concept of energy equivalence is correct as far as sound energy or physical dose is concerned. However, between this principle and work physiological and work psychological, i.e. ergonomics paradigms, some decisive ...

Mathematical Theory of Statistics

The series is devoted to the publication of monographs and high-level textbooks in mathematics, mathematical methods and their applications. Apart from covering important areas of current interest, a major aim is to make topics of an interdisciplinary nature accessible to the non-specialist. The works in this series are addressed to advanced students and researchers in mathematics and theoretical physics. In addition, it can serve as a guide for lectures and seminars on a graduate level. The series de Gruyter Studies in Mathematics was founded ca. 30 years ago by the late Professor Heinz Bauer and Professor Peter Gabriel with the aim to establish a series of monographs and textbooks of high ...

School Choice and the Quasi-market

School Choice and the Quasi-market

Throughout much of the industrialised world in the 1980s and 1990s governments divested themselves of responsibility for providing services for their citizens and espoused the ideology of the market. In education the term ‘quasi-market’ has been used to describe the situation where the market forces introduced into schooling differ in some fundamental respects from classical free markets. This book brings together specially written accounts of developments in the quasi-market in nine countries. The authors were asked to focus on their own particular country and to review policy developments in school choice over the previous five to ten years. In addition they were asked to assess the research evidence on the workings of the quasi-market of schools and, in particular, the effects of such changes on children of different genders and from differing social class and ethnic backgrounds. The result is a series of thought-provoking articles that add greatly to our understanding of the pressures that led to quasi-markets in education, and of how particular countries have responded to such changes and to the potentially inequitable effects of such moves.

An indispensable primary source in the history of Zionism. The First Zionist Congress, held in Basel, Switzerland, in August 1897, was arguably the most significant Jewish assembly since antiquity. Its delegates surveyed the situation of Jews at the end of the nineteenth century, analyzed cultural and economic issues facing them, defined the program of Zionism, created an organization for planning and decision-making, and coalesced in camaraderie and shared aspiration. Though Zionism experienced multiple conflicts and reversals, the Congress’s goal was ultimately realized in the establishment of Jewish sovereignty in Palestine—the State of Israel—in 1948. As Theodor Herzl, the Congress’s...
