Evangelicalism 1785-1835

Awarded the Hulsean Prize in the University of Cambridge in 1962, this interpretation of a classic period of English evangelicalism, by a young church historian, is now supplemented by reflections on evangelicalism from the vantage point of a retired Professor of Theology. Haddon Wilmer was Professor of Theology, University of Leeds, UK.

The term "Child Theology" is a 21st century invention. But the substance of Child Theology is as old as the Good News of Jesus. When his disciples were making serious mistakes in their theological argument about greatness in the Kingdom of God, he placed a child among them. In June 2002 a group of Christians met in Penang, Malaysia to explore what was meant by "Child Theology." One of the outcomes was the request for a book on the subject. Entry Point is the book! It is not an attempt to define the shape and content of Child Theology, but rather a record of a pioneering trip into largely uncharted territory which invites readers to explore what it might mean to receive this child as: a challenge to radical conversion, a clue to the truth about the kingdom of God, a reminder that following Jesus into the kingdom means denying self and taking up the cross, an encouragement to live in the resilience of resurrection, a helper in making universal community with God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

A Theological Assessment of Reconciliation for Missiology in the Korean Context

Any Christian who lives in such a broken world may ask God what their role would be as the person who is reconciled with God, and about the implications of the vertical dimension of reconciliation. Many would agree that the vertical and horizontal dimensions of reconciliation should not be separated. It is, however, still necessary to examine further. For instance, what does the inseparableness of the two dimensions actually mean—in theory and practice? How does the vertical dimension of reconciliation become the source and foundation of the horizontal dimension? How should the church maintain its theology of reconciliation, which includes both dimensions? All these questions point to an u...

The Logic of the Spirit in Human Thought and Experience

In March 2012 a small consultation convened on the campus of Princeton Theological Seminary, where James E. Loder Jr. had served for forty years as the Mary D. Synnott Professor of the Philosophy of Christian Education. Members from the Child Theology Movement had begun to read Loder's work and they wanted to go further. So they invited former students of Loder's to meet with them for conversations about things that really mattered to them and to Loder: human beings (and especially children), the church's witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ, and discerning the work of Spiritus Creator in the postmodern world. The conversations proved rich and rewarding and some would even say they took on a life of their own - serious scholarship set to the music of the Spirit's communion-creating artistry forming new relationships, inspiring new ideas, and sustaining all of it amid much laughter, joy, and hope. These essays, taken from the papers delivered at the consultation, are offered as a means of extending that conversation inspired by Loder's interdisciplinary practical theological science and his discernment of the

The purpose of this book is to combine perspectives of scholars from Africa on Child Theologies from a variety of theological sub-disciplines to provide some theological and ministerial perspectives on this topic. The book disseminates original research and new developments in this study field, especially as relevant to the African context. In the process it addresses also the global need to hear voices from Africa in this academic field. It wants to convey the importance of considering Africa’s children in theologising. The different chapters represent diverse methodologies but the central and common focus is to approach the subject from the viewpoint of Africa’s children. The individua...
