Die Tropen sind gleichzeitig eine geografische Region und eine machtvolle und einflussreiche kulturelle Konstruktion, deren Geschichte eng mit dem europäischen Kolonialismus verbunden ist. Welche Zusammenhänge bestehen zwischen der Kunstgeschichte, historischen Imaginationen der Tropen und heutigen Tropenbildern im Tourismus, in der Werbung und der Populärkultur? Anhand künstlerischer Positionen zeitgenössischer Fotografie geht Hanna Büdenbender den Konstruktionen und Dekonstruktionen der Tropen nach. Die Studie führt analog zum Orientalismus den Begriff des Tropikalismus ein, um damit die visuelle Konstruktion der Tropen als imaginäre Geografie offenzulegen.
Slavery in Art and Literature
Slavery, both in its historical and modern forms, continues to be a matter of undiminished political and social relevance. This is mirrored by an increasing interest in scholarly research as well as by critical statements from within the field of contemporary art. The present volume is designed to bring together artists and scholars from various fields of study discussing trauma and visuality, or more precisely, memory and denial of traumatic history within visual discourses. The purpose of this project is to put the phenomenon of contemporary art production dealing with the issue of slavery into a wider, interdisciplinary and transcultural context. The book covers current case studies focusing on different media and including visual, literary and performative approaches of dealing with the history of slavery in West-African, American and European cultures.

Bewusst im Paradies: Kitsch und Reflexivität
Im Gegensatz zu Kunst gilt Kitsch als aufdringlich und wenig reflexiv. Doch ist diese Entgegensetzung nicht zu einfach gedacht? Könnte es nicht zahlreiche Zwischenstufen der Reflexivität geben? Thomas Küpper geht diesen Fragen nach und diskutiert dazu verschiedene Positionen aus Literatur, Philosophie, Film und Fernsehen, von Walter Benjamin bis André Rieu. Dabei zeigt er auf, dass Kitsch bestimmte Formen von Reflexivität braucht, um dem Publikum heile Welten, große Gefühle und kleine Fluchten bieten zu können: Wie beim Fiktionspakt im Sinne von Samuel Taylor Coleridge geht das Publikum einen Pakt mit dem Kitsch ein.

Es theoretisiert ein hybrides Kunstverständnis, das hegemonial geprägte Dichotomien überwindet. Irina Hiebert Grun analysiert zeitgenössische Werke von Ricardo Basbaum, Anna Maria Maiolino, Cildo Meireles, Ernesto Neto und Adriana Varejão, die neue Varianten der kulturellen Anthropophagie erproben. Damit liefert sie einen Beitrag zu einer dezentrierten, transkulturellen Kunstgeschichtsschreibung, die ein Aufbrechen des westlichen Kanons und die Einnahme einer globalen Perspektive fordert.
