Hans Grauert was one of the world's leading mathematicians in the field of Several Complex Variables; he not only shaped the development of this area decisively but was also responsible for some of its most important results. This representative selection of mathematical papers exhibits Grauert's influential research and reflects two decades of excellence. In this edition, each paper has been augmented by a detailed commentary, thus offering a comprehensive survey of the development of this fascinating subject from its beginnings in Münster and Göttingen. Hans Grauert may be regarded as a direct successor of Gauss, holding a chair at Göttingen that before him was held by Siegel, Weyl, Hilbert, Riemann and Gauss.

Complex Geometry

This volume contains a collection of research papers dedicated to Hans Grauert on the occasion of his seventieth birthday. Hans Grauert is a pioneer in modern complex analysis, continuing the il lustrious German tradition in function theory of several complex variables of Weierstrass, Behnke, Thullen, Stein, Siegel, and many others. When Grauert came on the scene in the early 1950's, function theory was going through a revolutionary period with the geometric theory of complex spaces still in its embryonic stage. A rich theory evolved with the joint efforts of many great mathematicians including Oka, Kodaira, Cartan, and Serre. The Car tan Seminar in Paris and the Kodaira Seminar provided imp...

Coherent Analytic Sheaves

Werke II, p. 235). 1. Sheaf Theory is a general tool for handling questions which involve local solutions and global patching. "La notion de faisceau s'introduit parce qu'il s'agit de passer de donnees 'locales' a l'etude de proprietes 'globales'" [CAR], p. 622. The methods of sheaf theory are algebraic. The notion of a sheaf was first introduced in 1946 by J. LERAY in a short note Eanneau d'homologie d'une representation, C.R. Acad....

Theory of Stein Spaces

1. The classical theorem of Mittag-Leffler was generalized to the case of several complex variables by Cousin in 1895. In its one variable version this says that, if one prescribes the principal parts of a merom orphic function on a domain in the complex plane e, then there exists a meromorphic function defined on that domain having exactly those principal parts. Cousin and subsequent authors could only prove the analogous theorem in several variables for certain types of domains (e. g. product domains where each factor is a domain in the complex plane). In fact it turned out that this problem can not be solved on an arbitrary domain in em, m ~ 2. The best known example for this is a "notched" bicylinder in 2 2 e . This is obtained by removing the set { (z , z ) E e 11 z I ~ !, I z 1 ~ !}, from 1 2 1 2 2 the unit bicylinder, ~ :={(z , z ) E e llz1

From Holomorphic Functions to Complex Manifolds

This introduction to the theory of complex manifolds covers the most important branches and methods in complex analysis of several variables while completely avoiding abstract concepts involving sheaves, coherence, and higher-dimensional cohomology. Only elementary methods such as power series, holomorphic vector bundles, and one-dimensional cocycles are used. Each chapter contains a variety of examples and exercises.

Who Are Those Guys can be used as a handbook for people who don't know anyone whose name is on the Wall, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. It is also an excellent resource for schoolchildren who visit the Wall during a class trip to Washington. Walking along the Wall looking for the name of someone you know is a totally different experience from just walking along the Wall. Before you go to the Wall, or the Travelling Wall, look through the stories in Who Are Those Guys until someone's name, story, place of residence, or birthday catches your attention. Who Are Those Guys gives you the opportunity to learn something about someone whose name is on the Wall, so that when you walk along the Wall, you will be looking for the name of someone you know, instead of just walking along the Wall.

Complex Analysis

This volume contains the Proceedings of the International Workshop "Complex Analysis", which was held from February 12-16, 1990, in Wuppertal (Germany) in honour of H. Grauert, one of the most creative mathematicians in Complex Analysis of this century. In complete accordance with the width of the work of Grauert the book contains research notes and longer articles of many important mathematicians from all areas of Complex Analysis (Altogether there a re 49 articles in the volume). Some of the main subjects are: Cau chy-Riemann Equations with estimates, q-convexity, CR structures, deformation theory, envelopes of holomorphy, function algebras, complex group actions, Hodge theory, instantons, Kähler geometry, Lefschetz theorems, holomorphic mappings, Nevanlinna theory, com plex singularities, twistor theory, uniformization.
