Although World War II began as a war in Europe, many in the United States, foreseeing the inevitable, began to prepare for war, putting no faith in the Neutrality Act. Preparations for war, essentially ending the Great Depression, affected the entire country, with Virginia particularly playing a major role. More than one million service men and women came to Virginia. The sheer scope of the military development in Virginia of the Army, Navy, Coast Guard and Air Force, providing training bases and support facilities, underscores the national resolve to be prepared. The book includes the Civil Air Patrol, wartime industry, POW camps, U-boat attacks, the Beach Patrol and other Virginia-related topics.

Mathematics - Key Technology for the Future

Efficient transfer between science and society is crucial for their future development. The rapid progress of information technology and computer systems offers a large potential and new perspectives for solving complex problems. Mathematical modelling and simulation have become important tools not only in scientific investigations but also in analysing, planning and controlling technological and economic processes. Mathematics, imbedded in an interdisciplinary concept, has become a key technology. The book covers the results of a variety of major projects in industrial mathematics following an initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. All projects are collaborations of industrial companies and university-based researchers, and range from automotive industry to computer technology and medical visualisation. In general, the projects presented in this volume prove that new mathematical ideas and methods can be decisive for the solution of industrial and economic problems.

The Allied Air Campaign Against Hitler's U-boats

No weapon platform sank more U-boats in the Second World War than the Allied aircraft. Whether it was an American ’plane operating from American escort carriers, US aircraft from Royal Air Force bases, or British aircraft from bases throughout the world, these officers and men became the most decisive factor in turning the tide of the Battle of the Atlantic against the German submarine threat. While the German crews could threaten escort vessels with torpedoes, or avoid them by remaining submerged, their leaders never developed an effective strategy against aircraft. However, the Allied aircraft did not enjoy much early success. British, Canadian and Australian air crews that fought the U-...
