Encyclopedia of Parallel Computing

Containing over 300 entries in an A-Z format, the Encyclopedia of Parallel Computing provides easy, intuitive access to relevant information for professionals and researchers seeking access to any aspect within the broad field of parallel computing. Topics for this comprehensive reference were selected, written, and peer-reviewed by an international pool of distinguished researchers in the field. The Encyclopedia is broad in scope, covering machine organization, programming languages, algorithms, and applications. Within each area, concepts, designs, and specific implementations are presented. The highly-structured essays in this work comprise synonyms, a definition and discussion of the top...

Automatic Parallelization

Distributed-memory multiprocessing systems (DMS), such as Intel's hypercubes, the Paragon, Thinking Machine's CM-5, and the Meiko Computing Surface, have rapidly gained user acceptance and promise to deliver the computing power required to solve the grand challenge problems of Science and Engineering. These machines are relatively inexpensive to build, and are potentially scalable to large numbers of processors. However, they are difficult to program: the non-uniformity of the memory which makes local accesses much faster than the transfer of non-local data via message-passing operations implies that the locality of algorithms must be exploited in order to achieve acceptable performance. The...

Advances in Computers

This is volume 72 of Advances in Computers, a series that began back in 1960 and is the oldest continuing series chronicling the ever-changing landscape of information technology. Each year three volumes are produced, which present approximately 20 chapters that describe the latest technology in the use of computers today. In this volume 72, we present the current status in the development of a new generation of high-performance computers. The computer today has become ubiquitous with millions of machines being sold (and discarded) annually. Powerful machines are produced for only a few hundred U.S. dollars, and one of the problems faced by vendors of these machines is that, due to the conti...

I wish to welcome all of you to the International Symposium on High Perf- mance Computing 2000 (ISHPC 2000) in the megalopolis of Tokyo. After having two great successes with ISHPC’97 (Fukuoka, November 1997) and ISHPC’99 (Kyoto, May 1999), many people have requested that the symposium would be held in the capital of Japan and we have agreed. I am very pleased to serve as Conference Chair at a time when high p- formance computing (HPC) has a signi?cant in?uence on computer science and technology. In particular, HPC has had and will continue to have a signi?cant - pact on the advanced technologies of the “IT” revolution. The many conferences and symposiums that are held on the subject around the world are an indication of the importance of this area and the interest of the research community. One of the goals of this symposium is to provide a forum for the discussion of all aspects of HPC (from system architecture to real applications) in a more informal and personal fashion. Today we are delighted to have this symposium, which includes excellent invited talks, tutorials and workshops, as well as high quality technical papers.

Euro-Par Conference Series Euro-Par is an annual series of international conferences dedicated to the p- motion and advancement of all aspectsof parallelcomputing. The major themes can be divided into the broad categories of hardware, software, algorithms and applications for parallel computing. The objective of Euro-Par is to provide a forum within which to promote the development of parallel computing both as an industrial technique and an academic discipline, extending the frontier of both the state of the art and the state of the practice. This is particularly - portant at a time when parallel computing is undergoing strong and sustained development and experiencing real industrial take-...

Welcometotheproceedingsofthe2ndInternationalSymposiumonParalleland Distributed Processing and Applications (ISPA2004) which was held in Hong Kong, China, 13–15 December, 2004. With the advance of computer networks and hardware technology, parallel and distributed processing has become a key technology which plays an imp- tant part in determining future research and development activities in many academic and industrial branches. It provides a means to solve computati- ally intensive problems by improving processing speed. It is also the only - ableapproachtobuildinghighlyreliableandinherentlydistributedapplications. Languages and Compilers for Parallel Computing

This book contains papers selected for presentation at the Sixth Annual Workshop on Languages and Compilers for Parallel Computing. The workshop washosted by the Oregon Graduate Institute of Science and Technology. All the major research efforts in parallel languages and compilers are represented in this workshop series. The 36 papers in the volume aregrouped under nine headings: dynamic data structures, parallel languages, High Performance Fortran, loop transformation, logic and dataflow language implementations, fine grain parallelism, scalar analysis, parallelizing compilers, and analysis of parallel programs. The book represents a valuable snapshot of the state of research in the field in 1993.

CONPAR 90 - VAPP IV

Parallel architectures are no longer pure research vehicles, as they were some years ago. There are now many commercial systems competing for market segments in scientific computing. The 1990s are likely to become the decade of parallel processing. CONPAR 90 - VAPP IV is the joint successor meeting of two highly successful international conference series in the field of vector and parallel processing. This volume contains the 79 papers presented at the conference. The various topics of the papers include hardware, software and application issues. Some of the session titles best reflect the contents: new models of computation, logic programming, large-grain data flow, interconnection networks...
