Models of Quantum Matter

An important task of theoretical quantum physics is the building of idealized mathematical models to describe the properties of quantum matter. This text is an introduction to the Bethe ansatz method. It introduces the physical concepts (e.g. the Fermi and Luttinger liquid and quantum phase transitions) and mathematical tools (e.g. many-particle Hilbert spaces and second quantization) needed to construct realistic models from a variety of fields of physics, especially condensed matter physics and quantum optics. The various forms of the Bethe ansatz - algebraic, coordinate, multicomponent, and thermodynamic Bethe ansatz, and Bethe ansatz for finite systems -are then explained in depth and employed to find exact solutions for the physical properties of the integrable forms of these strongly interacting quantum models.

Sixteenth International Congress on Mathematical Physics

The International Congress on Mathematical Physics is the flagship conference in this exciting field. Convening every three years, it gives a survey on the progress achieved in all branches of mathematical physics. It also provides a superb platform to discuss challenges and new ideas. The present volume collects material from the XVIth ICMP which was held in Prague, August 2009, and features most of the plenary lectures and invited lectures in topical sessions as well as information on other parts of the congress program. This volume provides a broad coverage of the field of mathematical physics, from dominantly mathematical subjects to particle physics, condensed matter, and application of mathematical physics methods in various areas such as astrophysics and ecology, amongst others.

Rigidity Theory and Applications

Although rigidity has been studied since the time of Lagrange (1788) and Maxwell (1864), it is only in the last twenty-five years that it has begun to find applications in the basic sciences. The modern era starts with Laman (1970), who made the subject rigorous in two dimensions, followed by the development of computer algorithms that can test over a million sites in seconds and find the rigid regions, and the associated pivots, leading to many applications. This workshop was organized to bring together leading researchers studying the underlying theory, and to explore the various areas of science where applications of these ideas are being implemented.

Fermions en Forte Interaction Et Supraconductivité À Haute Température

This text presents a survey of the properties of the new cuprates, the models which can be derived from microscopic considerations, and the theoretical tools which seemed most promising. The emphasis is on the comparison between fermi liquids, the high T2 superconductors and more exotic systems.

Recent Progress In Many-body Theories - Proceedings Of The 9th International Conference

This inaugural volume in a new series on quantum many-body theory contains the papers presented at the Ninth International Conference on Recent Progress in Many-Body Theories. The conference focused on the development and refinement of many-body methods. A major aim was to foster the exchange of ideas among physicists working in such diverse areas as nuclear physics, quantum chemistry, complex systems, lattice Hamiltonians, quantum fluids and condensed matter physics. A special feature was a session devoted to theories for many-electron systems in low-dimensional quantum dots, wires and electrons.

In the Place of Coincidence

  • Categories: Art

Another sparkling kaleidoscope of thought provoking, ground breaking work from Europe's most highly acclaimed multimedia design studio, Nofrontiere. More an experience than a book, In the Place of Coincidence continues the journey begun in the first volume but soars to even greater heights of unconstrained creativity. Clearly, Nofrontiere Design Studio is a place where the unpredictable is a constant in the daily work process and where the flow of interaction feeds inventiveness. With a unique blend of thought provoking vision and insight, limits of quality and diversity are constantly redefined. Works presented include such ground breaking projects as the complete multimedia dramatization of the Jewish Museum in Vienna, the multimedia visualization of the life and works of Sigmund Freud, and a number of innovative marketing applications created for BMW, Deutsche Bank, Umdasch and Unisys.
